Temple University senior Barry Nathan was a recipient of a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The coveted national award was given to only three Temple students for the upcoming fall semester.
The Gilman International Scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and offers awards for undergraduate study abroad. Nathan, who is a non-traditional student and former journalist and columnist, maintains a 3.5 grade point average as a History major.
Nathan, who still writes for two Temple publications, The Parable and the Temple Column, also contributes monthly to the Bucks County Courier-Times, and regularly to OpEd News.com using his nickname, Dusty.
"I was shocked the other day when I got home and found a large envelope tucked underneath my door," Nathan said. "I opened it and it was a Citation from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, House of Representatives, commending my Gilman award and acceptance to King's College in London. I've never had such a wonderful honor. It's a frame-job for sure."
It's like being in NYC with Pesos in your pocket. Everything costs the same, except your money is worth half as much. The tube (subway) cost about $8 each way. A sandwich at McD's is $5-$8. A one-bedroom flat in a decent area is about $2500, nothing fancy, mind you. Tuition alone is $12,000 a semester. :)
Thanks for the good wishes, Davy. I can use them in any city I'm in. ;)
