[Webshot taken Sunday evening of petition tally]

Florida Representative Robert Wexler is steadily closing in on 200,000 signatures on an online petition he posted in December calling for citizen support of impeachment proceedings commencing at once against Vice President Richard B. Cheney.

Rep. Wexler, a member of the House Judiciary Committee where impeachment proceedings are considered, has said that he plans to submit this list to the HJC when the House of Representatives returns to session the week of January 15th.

Former Democratic Party Presidential nominee Senator George McGovern announced today that he has finally painfully come to agree that impeachment hearings are warranted and are in the best interest of the nation. McGovern did so in an article published in Sunday's Washington Post entitled: Nixon Was Bad. These Guys Are Worse.

If you agree with Rep. Wexler and Senator McGovern and believe that an investigation of Cheney's pre-war statements and actions is warranted and are interested in adding your name to the petition, you can do so online at: www.WexlerWantsHearings.com

Wexler writes:

"Some of us were in Congress during the impeachment hearings of President Clinton. We spent a year and a half listening to testimony about President Clinton’s personal relations. This must not be the model for impeachment inquires. A Democratic Congress can show that it takes its constitutional authority seriously and hold a sober investigation, which will stand in stark contrast to the kangaroo court convened by Republicans for President Clinton. In fact, the worst legacy of the Clinton impeachment – where the GOP pursued trumped up and insignificant allegations - would be that it discourages future Congresses from examining credible and significant allegations of a constitutional nature when they arise."

There are lots of reasons for impeaching, but this has to be an important one. No one out here in the American colonies has been entirely happy living under US tutelage -- at least, not since Reagan kick-started globalization and made it abundantly clear that the US is rich because most of the rest of the world is poor, and keeping it that way was America's top priority. But we put up with it because the US could still be cajoled into demonstrating that it still had a few worthy principles.

However, the Clinton impeachment taught us that the Western world was nothing but a ship of fools captained by the most foolish of them all. In other words, the decline of the American brand started long before Bush deep-sixed it completely. The road back to American self-respect (and global respect for the US) begins with a repudiation of the clownish performance that was the Clinton impeachment. Impeaching the current administration would help to illustrate that Americans do know what "high crimes and misdemeanours" are -- that when Washington condemns the behaviour of some other state, it might just have a valid point.

I hope every American who reads this website has surfed over to sign the petition. Do it for the sake of your famous patriotism.
