Headlined on 11/19/07:
Why I am running for Congress

I am running for Congress, as a Green, because I want to offer the voters an alternative to the Democrat/Republican cabal that is ruining our great nation, driving us into bankruptcy, destroying our international reputation, and dismantling our Republic.

I believe in the US Constitution and the rule of law.  I believe in  the sovereignty, the governing authority, of We the People.  I believe that Bush and Cheney have violated the US Constitution many times over, and should be impeached.  It was the clear intention of the Founding Fathers that any president and/or vice president who tried to consolidate power in a “unitary executive” should be impeached.

California District 1 is currently represented by Congressman Mike Thompson, a party-line Democrat.  Like every other public official, he has sworn an oath to uphold and defend the US Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic.  Yet he has refused to sign cosponsor the several bills of impeachment that have been brought before the House since 2004- H Res 635 in the 109th Congress, and 333 and 799 in the present Congress.  He stands with Nancy Pelosi in keeping impeachment off the table.  By not working to impeach the greatest enemies the Constitution has ever had, Mike Thompson is violating his oath of office, and betraying his constituents.

The need for impeachment is my original motivation in running for Congress.  As I study Mike Thompson’s record, however, I find that he is hypocritical in a number of areas.  He has stated publicly that he is for impeachment, but refuses to act on this belief.  He says he is for pulling us out of the Iraq occupation, but consistently votes for more funding for Bush’s illegal military adventure.  He is against a national health insurance plan which would cover the poor, but was one of the Democrats who voted for George W. Bush’s tax cuts for the rich.

As a parent and a senior, I worry about the future.  I am watching the economy, the environment, the public sector, the quality of life deteriorate rapidly since Bush took office.  Meanwhile, the US government, Bush and Cheney with the collusion of Congress, spends billions of our tax dollars daily on illegal, immoral attacks on other countries.  Mike Thompson, by refusing to vote for impeachment and by consistently voting for military spending bills, is part of the problem.

As a psychiatrist, I am watching the country being hypnotized by madmen who believe that they, and some of us, can survive a nuclear war.  By threatening to nuke Iran, they have turned Iran’s military allies, Russia and China, against us.  Bush and Cheney have openly threatened us with World War III.  This is insane and suicidal.

As a patriotic American, I am watching in horror as our precious freedoms and civil liberties are trampled.  Mike Thompson has done nothing to repeal or amend the Patriot Act, the Homeland Security Act, the Military Commissions Act, which render any opponents of Bush and Cheney vulnerable to being labeled “enemy combatants” and to being “disappeared”, without even the protection of habeas corpus.  The legislation for fascism is all in place, and Mike Thompson has allowed it to happen.

We need a clean sweep of Congress.  I am not a politician, and never ran for public office until my independent write-in candidacy for the District 1 seat in ’06.   As a concerned, informed citizen, I want to offer the voters an alternative to Mike Thompson’s complicity with the high crimes and atrocities of the Bush administration.

I am concerned about the intentions of our elected leaders.
Stephen HartI am concerned about the intentions of our elected leaders.

An endorsement with reservations.

I wish you luck. I am for the ouster of any Democrat who is acting as an enabler to the Republican agenda, as long as the attempt does not cause a seat to be lost to the Republicans as occurred in the Ralph Nader debacle. I have to admit I would be more comfortable with strong challenges in the Democratic primaries. We would be much better served with runoff elections requiring a majority to win.
