Headlined on 8/26/08:
Who Are These Women?

This old girl lived through the days of sexual discrimination when it was hard to get a decent job simply because I am a woman. I went through a lot of years struggling for what is fair and the ability to able to support my family and watched other women struggle for what was right and equitable as well. Most of us didn't enjoy the luxury of burning our bras, they were too expensive to replace, but we did learn to be strong.

We gained a lot of ground in those days, mostly because working class women stood up and decided they were not going to take it anymore. Many of us could not take off work to march or attend fancy seminars on the rights of women, but we made sure we voted and we voted Democrat.

Even with all that was accomplished these past forty plus years, today I watch my own daughter and other young women fighting some of the same battles. But, in all these years never once did I think I would live to see the day that any Democratic woman would throw away all we've worked for or turn their backs on the hard won rights of their own daughters and grand daughters. It makes me embarrassed for my party and my gender.

I never imagined some Democratic women today would be so willing or so gullible to allow themselves to be used and abused by the Republican Party. No one could have told me that there would be any Democratic woman today who would be willing to throw away our hard won pro-choice rights by voting for John McCain.  No one.  I would have called them a liar and a fool as it would have been unthinkable.

Who are these women that are now willing to throw our freedom of choice in the most personal decision a woman can make away?  Why would these women support a man who does not support equal pay for women?  What Democratic woman today would endorse another eight years of Republican failure which has harmed our family's economic future or endorse a man whose policies would lead us into even more senseless war?

Never did I ever imagine that even one Democratic woman would vote for a man whose own proposals to cut VA expenses would exclude 'non-combat related' benefits for any PTSD or other emotional problems suffered by the 15% of female military combat troops who have been raped. Who are these Democratic women that would turn their backs on a sister trying to recover from the trauma of rape?

Why are these women willing to throw away all our advances, progress that took us years to build, simply because their candidate did not win? Who are they that they cannot hear the snickering and jokes coming from the Republican Party about how they will be used by McCain to win this election? Are these women so wrapped up in their own emotions and games they cannot see beyond their own disappointment or are they simply enjoying all the pandering by McCain supporters? Who are they to not appreciate what was won through years of fighting the same mindset McCain offers us now?

Are they too young to have been involved in the years of struggle it took to get us to this point in time and just don't understand the loss they wish to bring about? If not young, were they so rich the years of discrimination and no legal choice in our most private matters did not affect their own outcomes so they can't see the importance of rights to women less fortunate today?

Did they actively fight for pro-choice rights or have they simply inherited a right of choice they don't truly appreciate? Does it bother them all women in America may lose this right because a few Democratic women care more about themselves and their own political grievances towards their own party?

Is being on t.v. or attending a cocktail pity party hosted by the Republican Party more important than the future of choice? Since when do strong women put a politician before country or the universal needs of women? Why are they whining about being robbed yet are willing to rob our daughters and grand daughters of rights we fought so long and hard for?

Who are these women?

I hate the thought of burning a good bra. A good bra is like a good man, hard to find one that fits properly and is comfortable as well. Bras today are even more expensive than forty years ago and, of course, all women love our high dollar Victoria Secrets. Rather than burning a good bra, female Democrats should just mail an old, faded, worn out, worthless bra to John McCain's headquarters to let him know there are Democratic woman who will not roll over or be used by his campaign. The note should simply read "Strong women don't whine and they certainly do not give away hard earned rights. Strong women do not take comfort from the enemy nor do they take their eye off the ball. Neither are they willing to be used."

PUMA my

PUMA is funded and manipulated by the GOP. They are always one step ahead of the Dems when it comes to propaganda ops and dirty tricks; last time, it was Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, this time, it's PUMA.

And you know what, it might work again.

You never imagined ...

No one could of imagined what has taken place in this country.

No one could of imagined that such a large group of people could be manipulated for so long.

No one could have imagined that there would still be people falling for the same two party, left/right paradigm that squelches rational thought.

No could of imagined a government that represses it's people as it's speaks of freedom.

No one could imagined that a government would have people in it that would plan and execute  the murder of 3,000  innocent people in cold-blood on a sunny day in September, and then use that crime as a pretext to murder 1,200,000 more and counting.

No one could imagine that the people of that country would still believe that these same two parties that know of this crime, benefited from it, keep silent about it, would still be talking about supporting and voting for them.

Well, I take that back, apparently there are many that think that at least one of these parties is still there for them.

Imagine that?

Imagine

When Bush took office, I knew it would get bad, real bad, but like many, I could not imagine the full impact of what this adminstration would do in such a very short time.

And I do agree with you, until we have a viable third party and even fourth party, we'll keep on choosing between Pepsi and Coca Cola, both brought to us by the same 'manufacturers' and both leaving us with the same after taste in our mouths.

Why wait?

I've been hearing this argument all my adult life. The same problems, same people, same old solutions that just keep us in this downward spiral.

One would have thought that when we noticed this train going off the tracks at the very beginning of the primaries, considering we're still smarting from the betrayal of the 06' elections, that people would of said to hell with this and finally tuned towards an alternative, but NNNOOOOooo ... not this dumbed-down populace. They went right back to the party that abused them like a women goes back to an abusive mate, without even a second thought that now is the time to leave them.

Let me make this perfectly clear, there is a better chance that this will be our last election, if we even have it, than there is that we have time to make people aware enough that what they're doing is suicide.

I don't how up to speed you are, but we're one incident away from total nuclear war. And if we can escape that there are about a half-dozen human species extinction things that are happening we have to deal with. So I don't know what in the hell we're waiting for?

This asinine DNC is an example of just how deluded the people of this country have become.

Know this - I would wager that a majority of the higher-ups in the DP either had direct knowledge of 9/11 before the fact and are certainly guilty of it after the fact - in other words they are guilty of mass murder if for no other reason than their silence.

Yet, knowing this people still line-up to keep these murders in power. Now if that don't beat all.

New Party

I don't think a new party stands a snow ball's chance in hell until we get rid of Diebold etc.  More and more states are dropping electronic voting, hopefully more will go with a system like Oregon, and we may be able to push through a ban under Dem majority, but it would take a major outcry/demand from the public to accomplish this.

And yes, agree we are close to using nukes.  Our production of 'mini' nukes and actions such as arming Georgia, encouraging them to attack Ossetia, and our actions since show how far we are willing to push towards that end.  What I find amazing is that many Americans think as long as the nukes go off in another country, we would be safe from after effects here, whether those effects are radioactivity levels or even economic.

I also have my fingers crossed that George Bush will leave the Whitehouse quietly if, for whatever reason, the election does not go their way, assuming we hold elections that is.

If we're not going to play their game ...

why play by there rules?

Why wait for them to get rid of the E-voting machines. If we weren't able to get rid of them after 2000 and 2004, what makes anyone think we'll get rid of them anytime soon? Unless, of course we take sledge-hammers to them before the election. Which to me wouldn't even be a crime.

If my wish were to come true I would have all independents organize, get to know the other progressives in their district and show-up in mass, tell the pollsters where they can stick their machines and demand a paper ballot, and video the whole process, and tell them to validate that! Waiting around for change will just keep you waiting, the only change you'll have is getting older.

If the revolution is going to happen it is best we start it at the ballot-box because if it goes beyond that it definitely won't be pretty.

Now, will any of this happen?

Hell no.

Too many people are stuck in the matrix and they don't even no it exists.

It is my profound fear that we're on a the edge of an abyss, that the accumulation of thousands of years of human evolution is about to come to an abrupt and horrifying end. For all of mankind's accomplishments it seems that a handful of tenacious tyrants are going to end it all.

I certainly hope I'm wrong, but every indication is pointing in that direction.

Your mission is women's rights, and noble that it is, compared to what's coming, our ablity to merely survive is going to come into play.

And that's why I'm as passioanate as I am about trying to cut the head off these snakes before they start pushing buttons. 9/11 seems to me their most vunderable point. It's such an obviously botched crime. And if we could start peeling this onion we'd peel it down till we get near all the evil in the world.

You'd have you're women's rights, we'd stop wars, finance education and health, restore our environment and live in peace for another 10,000 years.

But it has to start now, not when we wait to get rid of e-voting machines.

9/11 Onion

Republicans have no interest in peeling that onion and we have no other viable alternate party at this point.  Best we can do is force issues like this this within a Dem admin/Senate/Congress.  If they wan to keep their jobs, they will cooperate.

PUMA in DEM's Clothing

“Bartoshevich reportedly falsely suggested that McCain does not support overturning Roe v. Wade. In fact, McCain's campaign website currently says: "John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned."

http://mediamatters.org/items/200808260024?f=h_latest

Per the above article, two major networks, ABC and NBC, did not even comment on the gaffe which happened during an earlier Republican press conference, during their later news coverage on Bartoshevich's McCain ad.

I don't care who these PUMA women support, but they need to drop the games and at least be upfront and honest from the beginning. An honest person does not follow a candidate wholeheartedly as some of these women supposedly have, then go against everything that candidate stands for in order to back a different candidate that has completely opposite ideals and policies and timing the defection so it will create havoc within 'your' party. Bartoshevich knew McCain was against Roe v. Wade, anyone following politics knows this.

The problem with allowing yourself to be used like this is that it always ends up exposing you for the political shill and fool you are.

Judy,do you believe that women are being brainwashed?

In this day and age there's plenty of propaganda to go around. And at least two conspiracy theories for every criticism of "the other side." In a sense we are having the same conversation as we had during early primary days, hardly knowing whether to discuss race or gender.

Even the most browbeaten of women have more to think about than rights to an abortion. After all, Roe was hailed as the right of a citizen (in this case a woman) to that person's own body. In the case of the most downtrodden, who blame their ethnicity for the tough row to hoe, race is only one element. In my view, if a person blames his/her circumstance on a single reason, they are stuck in a trap adolescents sometimes live through, usually blaming a parent--for everything from the wrong appearance to not having the coolest car.

If the snit is temporary it will go away. PUMAs don't live down the street from each other, or at least I gather they are the product of MySpace or some such instrument.

As someone in Congress said when the Monica affair came out, "It's so adolescent." I assume he meant the amount of words spent, not on the affair itself. Or maybe both ?

Do these women who want McCain for president think he will invite them to one of his houses? I remember when I was about 16 I spent a month gaga over Bing Crosby, because he reminded me of my teacher who was a real light in my life. When I found der Bingle leaned Republican I dropped him and just enjoyed his music.

Snits

Margaret,

It looks like those who simply suffer from a case of the snits are getting over it.  I can understand their upset and do admire that they are able to put their preferences aside for the good of their party.

Where I become confused is that some women, apparently some in the PUMA group, which I do want to research more, seem to be saying it's their way or the highway.  Even after Hillary pledged her support, they refused to take her at her word or support her in supporting Obama.  I have trouble understanding why some of these women who wholeheartedly supported the platform of Hillary, reject an almost identical platform of the other Dem, and jump ship for a politician that is the total opposite, including the one who did so without even checking on how McCain feels on the issue of abortion, always a major issue during elections,  before she declared him a pro-choice candidate and went on to tout her change in vote for him on national tv.  It seemed a bit too pat for me.  I find it hard to believe an intelligent woman would not check out the candidate on all major issues before she jumped ship.  I also find it hard to believe that all swiftboaters are male.  I need to research this group more but, so far, I really can't see where they have the Democratic Party's interests at heart.

I do agree with what you have to say about how some tend to focus on one or two 'reasons' for their problems.  I suppose it is simply human nature or even the easiest way to avoid introspection or working on the actual problems.  As with policies put into place by this current admininstration, it is not just one issue which is the root of some of the problems facing families, but the result of many failed policies which have snowballed to the point many areas of our lives have been affected.  We can't blame all our problems on the government but I do think we have to ensure they do not compound our everyday problems, even the ones we bring on ourselves.

As far as abortion, it is one issue but if we cannot protect that one right of choice, others may be lost as well.  Right now we have pharmacists who want to be able to refuse to fill birth control prescriptions, even if they are the only pharmacy in town.  We have those against the use of the morning after pill.  And who can forget the Schiavo fiasco?  There are some, McCain included, who will not even fully protect a woman's right to equal pay.  Our next president will be appointing Supreme Court Justices who will serve for many years.  I think we have to step carefully here and ensure we maintain what rights we still have.

And thank you for your post, it was very insightful and I will enjoy going back over it off and on as it gave us all something to think on.

believe it or not....

Judy, with all due respect, please understand that not every single woman in America thinks it's a "civil right" to kill her pre-born child. There are even women who are Democrats and are opposed to abortion. To be brutally honest about it, don't you think that as women we DO already have a choice, when we get in bed with a man and open our legs? If you don't want to risk getting pregnant, then don't have sex -- just because we might happen to be horny, we CAN control ourselves and not have sex -- we're not animals. Mother Teresa said, "It is a poverty that a child must die so you can live as you wish." That's the truth -- is it something to be proud of that we're so selfish we'll sacrifice a life for the sake of an orgasm?

And please understand that just as you are adamantly for abortion, there are just as many women (from all political parties) who are opposed to it.

Abortion

I think all women can respect that abortion is one of the most personal decisions a woman can make, one between her own God,  her doctor and herself.

This is true whether no matter how the sex happened.  We can't forget that some pregnancies result from rape.  Should it be anyone other than the women traumatized by the rape and resulting pregnancy have the right to decide how much she should be forced to be put through?  Should a 13 year old raped by her father be forced to carry the pregnancy to term if her doctor and mother and the child decide it is not in her best interest?  Should a woman not have the right to decide if she cannot financially and emotionally care for a child who has massive health problems?

Should a drug addict be forced to carry to term a child unlikely to be adopted?

This is more than simply an abortion issue.  It has to do with freedom of self determination and separation of church and state.

McCain just chose an evangelical friendly  female running mate, Sarah Palin, on this issue alone, it certainly was not for her years of experience on foreign policy etc.  We shall soon see how the women of America feel about freedom of choice on this issue.

For abortion?

There are many women who would not have an abortion themselves, but respect the right of all women to make such a personal decision in this regard for herself.
