Yes, this is a controversial issue, but there is only one solution.
In order to eliminate gun violence, we must gradually eliminate the guns.
I know, I know, many gun owners will not give up their cherished and "heirloom" guns, and feel they need them for protection from others with guns. I have heard all the NRA and gun rights arguments, and I refute them all. Guns are made to kill, and they do.
What I propose is a gradual, less drastic phasing out of private gun possession, perhaps over two generations. After you die, you will no longer need your guns. Think about that. It is time to pry the gun from Charlton Heston's cold, dead fingers.
Those who cling to their licensed guns scam have the option of keeping them for life, at which time they should be turned in or bored out so they cannot be fired. They could then either be turned in or be willed to responsible children, who would have the option of turning them in, boring them out, and then be required to turn them in or bore them out when they die. Turn them in before that if you wish, or place them in gun museum "jails" where you can go and visit them. This is necessary for future generations, as the gun problem will only continue to grow worse unless action is taken.

Also ask for a ban on assault weapons and a large tax on bullets.

Repeal the Second Amendment which applies to militias of 230 years ago that no longer exist and get rid of all the guns and ammunition too.
Get Rid of the Guns and Ammunition. Stop the gun violence.
People cling to their guns and stockpile more because they fear others with guns.
When guns and ammunition are outlawed, over time thier numbers will diminish.
Let's begin with stopping the manufacture and sales of new guns and ammunition.
Then tax and gradually outlaw existing guns and ammunition.
Close the gun show loophole.
Then end all gun shows and gun sales.
Start gradual gun turn in programs, which can progress over two generations.
Give most police batons, as in England.
It is time to pry the gun from Charlton Heston's cold, dead fingers!
