CAW Sends Letters To 40 US Attorneys Demanding Enforcement Of Campaign Finance Law And Urges President Obama To Sign Executive Order Requiring Federal Contractors To Disclose Donations

On May 5th, we sent letters to 40 US Attorneys requesting that they go after groups that violated campaign finance laws during the 2010 election, including Karl Rove's groups and the US Chamber of Commerce. We included over 12,000 signatures from American citizens from every state who want something done to stop the flood of undisclosed money corrupting our elections. Here is a copy of the letter we sent to Patrick Fitzgerald who is US Attorney in the Northing District of Illinois.

If you have not signed on to the campaign yet, you can sign on to our DOJ letter here
and you can send a letter to Congress here
and you can send a letter to your local US Attorney by following the instructions here.

We are educating the media and politicians that the Federal Election Commission is not the only way to enforce campaign finance laws. In fact, the Federal Election Campaign Act gives concurrent jurisdiction to the Department of Justice to use criminal enforcement provisions to hold violators accountable. Yesterday, after we sent out our press release, we received several calls from national reporters surprised that they did not know this important fact.

Just last week, Congressman Chris Van Hollen sued the FEC for failing to follow the law regarding disclosure of donations to these (c)(4) groups, and President Obama prepared an executive order requiring companies doing business with the federal government to reveal any donations of more than $5,000. Today we issued a press release strongly urging the President to sign that executive order and ignore the opposition by the Chamber of Commerce and Senate GOP leadership.

Let's keep the momentum going--You can help by calling (202-456-1111) or FAXing (202-456-2461) the White House to support the new executive order, and make sure you sign on and spread the word.
