I sit here in amazement as i watch our country, one that has stood proudly for over two hundred years, fall flat on her face. Not since the Civil War have we seen such immense division. I don't remember ever hearing of a congressional attempt, by any political party, to bring the country and her people to such a collapse, nor do I remember any state taking away the rights and security of its own people without their consent.
These are the sort of actions that helped bring on the Revolutionary War. These were the types of government actions that our forefathers left behind to create a new world...a new country that meant freedom for many people. It was that dream which created the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Now here we are ending the year in chaos and waiting to see what the new year has in store for us. We are witnessing a blatant attempt by extreme wealth to take rights and freedoms from the majority. To take away values they believe in ... and have fought for... and put the working class in poverty and slavery so the wealthy may become wealthier at its expense.
These are fascist ideas which will destroy the fabric of our Democracy. Our nation fought a war against fascism in the 40's. As a child I lived in Germany after the war as a military brat. I was young but very impressionable...I saw the horrors that the war had created. Then I went to England and saw the results of that war from another perspective. These views left very vivid impressions on me ... they created who I am today. They gave me sharp eyes to see what others don't want to see ... refuse to see. Just like fascist Germany in 1934, we are now seeing a form of fascist control being reenacted in states such as Michigan and Ohio.
We have always stood proud, even during our growing years. We were able to forge our country ahead...with the body of trusted representatives usually keeping common interest and common sense in the forefront. This is no longer the case. Now there is one political party holding the people hostage in their own country. Do not raise the taxes on the wealthy, yet the taxes will be raised on the poor and what is left of the middle class. Something is wrong here...our representatives have now been purchased. They are in the thrall of the wealthy and doing their bidding.
There was a time when we could trust our elected representatives ... I'm just not sure now when that was ... We have been terribly betrayed by the few ... We have been played for fools by the same people we were supposed to trust. They play on the fears and disinformation spread by a sensationalist media. They tell people what they want to hear then betray them.
A possible solution would be to initiate a Constitutional Convention with objectives to:
1) To discuss term limitations on state and federal representatives
2) Direct election of POTUS - no more electoral college
3) Line item veto for POTUS
4) Pay of elected representatives voted on by the people
5) A separate and private funding for campaigns that would allow the running of anyone qualified for an office.
Just to name a few items that need to be addressed and brought into the 21st century
Jefferson and Hamilton had disparate views about what this nation could and should become. True Democracy or a Republic were greatly debated. What we have had is something of a blend of both. What none of the founders postulated for the new nation was the fascist oligarchy we are now moving toward.
