Our government in the United States and the electoral process that has so corrupted it, must be dealt with.
Read some of the words in our Declaration of Independence, "Governments are instituted among men deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new Government"when a long train of abuses and usurpations"evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government."
The 1 st Amendment to the Constitution reads, in part, "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and petition the Government for a redress of grievances" shall not be abridged.
The first quote above was of course depicting the plight of the people under British rule of the American colonies at the time of the signing on July 4, 1776. The latter quote, as part of the "Bill of Rights" was ratified December 15, 1791.
These "words" are no less fitting to describe the conditions of the people today and the means for which they address a government that reign over them, largely without their consent, at the close of 2011.
Because, our government and the electoral process which determines it, has been completely corrupted and usurped by the rich corporate and special interests make that a government beholden to a plutocracy of oligarchs and no longer representative of the people.
That government has enacted laws and regulations, conducted oversight and enforcement that goes to the benefit of the aforementioned interests and to the detriment of the people's interests.
Our democracy, our republican form of government has become deformed, establishing an empire of military bases all over the world while exercising unwanted hegemony over foreign peoples' and their governments and initiating unnecessary and wrongful pre-emptive wars and occupations of choice that have nothing to do with the defense of the country.
Our government and its financial underwriters and overseers have created and unleashed a monstrous, deregulated laissez-faire capitalist system run amok, whose packaging and securitization of toxic assets were sold to unsuspecting buyers i.e. pension funds, large institutional investors and state and local governments et al that nearly brought the entire financial system to the brink of collapse, and as a direct consequence of its recklessness, brought with it the worst economic recession since the 1930's depression (to which they have been largely held unaccountable).
It is rotten and corrupt to the core; no longer possible to reform it.
It must be overturned; not by violent revolution, but by the states and the people calling for and demanding a new Constitutional Convention to rectify the "long train of abuses and usurpations" we the people have long endured.
The occupy movement was born as a result of and the need for these abuses and usurpations to be loudly articulated and protested against and seen unmistakably as precipitated and perpetrated by the 1% reigning over the 99%.
The truth of the harsh and undeniable plight of the 99% at the hands of the 1% has been revealed. It is incontrovertible and no longer acceptable. There is no turning back.
