As we tumble, slink and slide into another national election cycle, one thing is abundantly clear -- this place is about as functional as a knotted intestine. The reality is that Fox News, Rush "Limbob", Glenn Beck, Ronald Reagan, Alex Jones, George W. Bush, the Koch twins, Jerry Falwell, Osama Bin Laden, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Ralph Reed and corporate co-opted political and commercial entities have succeeded.
Hate, fear, corporate greed and Nationalistic selfishness have repurposed the minds and goals of a many ostensibly good, intelligent and sane members of American society.
The election of Obama, while a milestone for this country, has brought every latent racist and paranoiac out of his or her woodshed or clubhouse to purposely or inadvertently influence the thought processes of their children, neighbors and Congress.
What should be a struggle against Global Warming, income inequality, globalization and on and on has become a struggle of American against American. Settled Science and social issues have been regurgitated and are being fed again into the national consciousness and discourse. We are having public debates about men living with dinosaurs and rapists having rights to their victim's bodies. The rest of the industrialized world appears to be attempting to address issues that matter and the Exceptional One, the "Shining City On The Hill" is promoting midget wrestling in its own vomit. This place is a wreck.
A friend yesterday said, "Jesus did it." Another friend said "No, it's the Jews." My neighbor said., "It's the liberals." I heard I guy bark in the bar, "It's the Blacks!" I overheard a woman at the grocery store in front of the Ice Cream case. "The Queers are responsible." The guy next to me pitching horseshoes blamed "crazy Muslims." "No, it's the Mexicans overrunning the place," said a fellow in line at a local cafeteria.
I've been thinking lately about a young Mexican nun I knew years ago that laughed about everything. She confided in me that she really loved men. I then asked why she had become a nun. She said that she had always wanted to be one and that her family was very proud of her. She went on to tell me that she had had a torrid love affair with a young man prior to donning the habit. I then asked her how she felt about her choice now? She answered that she was very committed to God and the Church but if the right fellow came along she would seriously consider forsaking her vows. I asked if she could really do this? She observed the very serious look on my face and started laughing, saying, "You don't think God is a fool do you?"
America has taken God for a fool.
