I'm not going to repeat the recent stupid and backward pronouncements by zany Republicans on the subject of sex, rape and abortion. Nor am I going to dignify the asinine comments by a set of white guys in the Republican Party who see rape as "no big deal" and that if it is inevitable then the woman should "lie down and enjoy it." And if a pregnancy occurs then no matter the circumstances of the sexual encounter and the fact that "the woman did not want it" - it's a blessing from God.
Now I have heard some very oddball things from out of the mouths of Republican leaders but this one beats back even the new/old GOP concept of "legitimate rape." I tell you: these guys need to be certified. Crazy is not the word to describe them. Try delusional, unhinged, demented and unplugged from reality. Divorced from today's reality their beliefs put them squarely in the 1820s and the days of the Chastity Belt.
The twisted logic that produces such a Neanderthal-thinking life form of this type is the result of an aberrant DNA screw up that seems to blight the Republican Party today. And not to be outdone, the party's presidential standard bearer, Mitt (you know what that rhymes with; it starts with "S") Romney's "binders full of women" eye brow-raising comment has also defined the party as either in desperate need of education about women or its happy to be the denizens of the 18th century flopping around in the 21st century.
But the illogical, twisted, crazy thought processes that produces these gems of stupidity is the end result of years of racism and discrimination against women and a mindset that still sees them as baby factories and second-class citizens, that possess only the rights that their husbands, brothers, uncles or fathers give to them. It this mindset that is responsible for the so-called "honor killings" and gang rapes of women in places like Pakistan.
Rape is a crime of power and control. It leaves severe emotional scars on the woman that sometimes never heals. It is a holdover from the days of savagery and barbarism and is the most primitive manifestation of the negative male human condition. Its defense, for that's what it is, by people in high public office is also linked to the issue of white power and privilege. That arrogant entitlement belief and control over all things also includes women as objects of possession as so many cars, cows, donkeys etc.
Remember when white men considered and decreed that a woman place was in the home? Cooking, cleaning and slaving for him? And if she stepped out of line he was within his legal rights to punish her; physically and verbally abuse her, as the law looked the other way? Remember when millions of Black people were classified as property and thousands of defenseless Black female slaves were raped by their "owners" and who were powerless to complain? That these white men saw raping "their property" as ordained by God?
We should never be surprised by this still pervasive "Southern planter mentality." It's what these people think of women. It's what they say behind closed doors, in their homes, and in conversations with the party's faithful where "n-word, coon and boy" are still used to describe Black people in the 21st century. The thing is that when their foetid beliefs slip into the public discourse people are alarmed and angry. But nothing ever happens. After all, there's that little pesky constitutional right to "free speech" -- no matter how objectionable and hurtful.
So a white Republican senate candidate can call his female (and white) Democratic opponent a dog "playing fetch" and he gets two days of angry Social Media attacks and negative press coverage then it's on to the next stupid outburst.
Then there is the abortion rights kooky crowd. I never saw a more ignorant bunch of zealots. It's as if the Bible has twisted them into a zombified version of "I can't think for myself." Now I know why some religious crackpots feel kissing a highly venemous Puff Adder is a way to show their faith in God. God frowns on stupidity and believe me even the Almighty would either be amused and amazed at such imbecility or be taken aback and have serious doubts that He created those morons in "His own image and likeness."
For me the issue is simple. No woman should be made to carry a baby to full term after becoming pregnant from a rape. Heck, its simple logic; its common sense. She was forced to have sex with a brutish person; sometimes a stranger, a criminal predator. That child -- if she's forced to have it -- would ALWAYS remind her of that rape.
And what if it was never born? Dammit. These folks believe that life starts when the male sperm enters the female egg. What if the woman miscarries? Would they charge her with murder? Or involuntary manslaughter? By elevating a cluster of cells, no bigger than a man's thumb, without a heartbeat, a brain or hands or feet to the position of "personhood" those guys (and some gals too) have demonstrated their ignorance of human biology.
But wait, there's more. What about the opinion of the woman? That's heck, she has no say in this -- its God's decision. Maybe He communicated that to her? Or the crackpot making that statement in "His name." Or He moved in mysteriously wondrous ways and inspired her rapist to do the dirty? You see just how stupid and illogical that this is? But that's the rationale for "legitimate rape" a la Arkin, a Republican Senate candidate.
Oh yes, the woman must see the rape and the pregnancy as a blessing from God. I tell you, the way these folks misrepresent God and arrogantly attribute all kinds of stupidity to Him. What they have done is to attribute man's vicious and abhorrent behavior to the Almighty by bringing Him in line with their warped and unhinged minds. Such unmitigated gall and arrogance.
It's part of the revisionist Republican agenda that also includes re-branding the institution of slavery as "a good thing for America." Its part of a narrative that says that neo-conservatism is all about extremism and idiocy. At its very core it is a long-held belief by racist and bigoted white males in the Republican Party that women are simply chattel property to be used, abused and then disposed because God gave them that "right" so to do.
Mr. Mitt Romney's failure to forcibly condemn these statements and distance himself from their makers disqualifies him as fit to be President of the United States. The buck stops with him in the Republican Party and even though he did not speak these hateful words he can't run from them. He's the standard bearer of the party.
