President Barack Obama's economic recovery bill — The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act — needs your help.

Conservatives are doing everything they can to delay and dilute the legislation. Yet quick, bold action on the economy is critical if we are to blunt the accelerating job losses of the year-long Bush recession.

Without positive pressure from the progressive majority, Congress will be vulnerable to right-wing obstructionist tactics, rendering the bill ineffective. Our voices are needed, now.

Call Congress NOW at 1-866-544-7573, and demand immediate passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

America voted for change last year, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will put us on the path of progressive change.

The bill is a vital first step to recovery. It will generate millions of new jobs, while making an immediate down payment on clean energy, modernized infrastructure, better education and more affordable health care. It will help states and cities keep police on the streets. It will provide those hit worst by this crisis — the unemployed and the poor — with significant help.

Conservatives in Congress have reacted with their mindless obstructionist reflex. They've been citing fictional reports, mischaracterizing the views of Obama's aides, and distorting what's in the actual legislation. We must overwhelm their lies with our strength in numbers, and let Congress know what the majority wants.

Call Congress NOW at 1-866-544-7573, and demand immediate passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Is this bill perfect? No. It is probably not large enough to lift the economy out of a recession which deepens each day. And it is weakened by concessions already made to the right, particularly business tax cuts that will do little to create new jobs.

Ironically, conservatives only want to make it smaller and include more tax giveaways to businesses. They will make it weaker, not stronger.

President Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is a bold first step to address the economic crisis. We cannot allow the right to weaken it further.

The louder our voices are, the more likely Congress will be emboldened to expand the package and make it even more progressive. We need your voice.

Call Congress NOW at 1-866-544-7573, and demand immediate passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Our coalition partners at Americans United for Change have provided a toll-free number that makes it easy to contact Congress. After calling 1-866-544-7573, you will be given brief instructions, then quickly forwarded to the congressional operators who can connect you to your Representative and Senators.

We are in the first days of what must be an era of dramatic progressive reform — reforms that will be contested every step of the way. Our first test is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

If we successfully seize this moment, and beat back the forces of conservative obstruction, the window will be wide open. If we don't, the window will slam shut.

It's time to act, and make change happen.

Thank you for all that you do. It has never been more important than now.

Sincerely,
