This week's Scorpio New Moon is also a partial solar eclipse, visible in most of North America and eastern Asia. A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth align and we see the Moon moving across the face of the Sun. This alignment disrupts the usual flow of solar energy, dissolving old energy and behavior patterns so something new can manifest.

At a solar eclipse, we get to see the planting of the solar seed in the New Moon's womb, and are therefore more conscious of what the possibilities are for this cycle. As you can see, solar eclipses create extra powerful New Moons, marking times of major endings and new beginnings to an aspect of your life. Eclipses occur close to the same degree every 19 years, so think back to what was happening in late October, 1995 for a clue to what this new beginning might entail for you. You can also look at your chart to see what planets and signs this eclipse is affecting. (Degrees affected below)

Scorpio is the sign where we are confronted with other people's values and emotional needs, which is very different from Libra's rational idealism concerning social justice and personal balance. Once we leave the socially conscious air sign of Libra, we are plunged into the dark depths of Scorpio's feeling life. What do we do when we're emotionally invested in someone else: how do we deal with their values and issues? Will we be accepted with all our darkness and light? Can we accept that deep truth in another?

Scorpio wants us to feel what the right action is to take, and that means seriously looking into the unconscious to understand what we really feel and want out of life. Not what we think we should want. Not what we've been told to want. But what we truly desire. And that means understanding our feelings of vulnerability and our fears concerning betrayal, violence, rejection and self-worth, and the unconscious defense mechanisms which keep us from our authentic truth.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign, tending to contain emotions which get stuck over time and stagnate. Old emotional patterns are often the hardest to deal with, because as a society we've elevated our rational minds at the expense of our feeling life. Many of us have been taught to ignore our feelings and so we are open to being overwhelmed by emotions, which then gather in those stuck emotional patterns that Scorpio ends up having to deal with. What happens is that we end up projecting emotional complexes onto people who are often unaware they are causing us inner turmoil. We are not meeting them face to face but rather through a transparent screen of expectations created by old emotional wounds.

That screen is what Scorpio wants to rip away. Scorpio wants to get at the truth of life and isn't afraid to grapple with the taboo issues our society--death, sex, money and power, life after death, the unseen dimensions of life. Scorpio turns our attention to those things which our upbringing causes us to feel shame, fear and embarrassment over.

Why aren't we teaching our kids sex education? Not teaching them hasn't helped. What's wrong with different sexual preferences? Sexually repressed societies think sex is a sin and so create prostitution. When are we going to stop pretending that death is part of the life cycle? Our fear of death is related to that sin thing again. When are we going to admit that money is power? And that 1 % of the people aren't supposed to rule in a democracy.

Life is full of these emotional issues, these societal taboos which scapegoat differences. And when we get stuck in a belief through religious fear, ignorance and control, the only way to change is to let go and allow an inner death. Scorpio is the sign dedicated to this emotional purge!

Scorpio's strength is that it isn't afraid of the Dark, and so when the Sun is in Scorpio, it is a perfect time to look at our Shadows and see what we've been in fear of, suppressing and repressing. When we can look within and see how those stuck emotional patterns keep us from what we truly want in life, we can consciously choose to shed those old patterns like a snake skin. What may have protected us in the past no longer serves our on-going life and we have to die to an old way of being and acting, to be re-born to a higher level of consciousness.

This is Scorpio's gift if we have the courage to accept it.

The Scorpio New Moon Solar Eclipse

The Scorpio New Moon occurs on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 2:57pm PDT/ 5:57 pm EDT/ 9:57pm GMT. The eclipse lasts for about 4 hours, from 12:38 to 4:52pm PDT/ 3:38 to 7:52pm EDT/ 7:38 to 11:52pm GMT.

This eclipse occurs at 1* Scorpio, so anyone with planets within 10* of this eclipse will feel some effect--especially those planets in Taurus, Leo and Aquarius. In fact, if you know which planets are affected, you can take the next month to consciously work with that energy. You'll be surprised at your ability to change when you conscientiously work with these archetypal energies.
