I tried to post a poll and was rejected. It was an unusual poll: I posted a challenge to all the OEN authors: if any of them agreed with me that GOP rhetoric resembled down to the letter the Nazi propaganda methodology, I urged those people to write an article about that and call it Newt Mitt Uns. The heading is a paraphrase of the statement Gott Mitt Uns ( God is with us) which was curved on the buckle of the uniform belt of every German military in the WWII- from private to Reichfuhrer ( Fuhrer Hitler preferred the civilian cloth in most cases). I like my heading -- it bears grotesque double- meaning : Newt is a primary ideologue of the GOP and Mitt is its a primary product. In German schools of Nazi times they told the students to learn by heart the statement, "If Jesus would have come back now, He would have followed the Furher.' In the GOP- developed and nourished environment this would sound something like "Jesus guides his messenger Mitt through his prophet Newt'. Newt Mitt Uns- works for me. I formulated that as a poll to see how many people shared my views and could accept the challenge because that required a detailed analysis, similar to the one written by Matt Taibbi on the real face of Romney:
Apparently it does not work for the OEN administrative system because my poll offer was rejected with unusual fastness- in about an hour. If the answer comes so quickly it means that it is delivered by a software- some database sorter picks up an inappropriate phrase or a word and rejects it by default. It is an IF- Then-Else- sequence working.
I bear no grudge. To run an enterprise like OEN is a tough job and whoever does it must feel comfortable about the inputs. I have my own blog and I surely could publish an article on it, write whatever I wanted. The difference though in this case was that I did not want to write an article on my own; I asked other people to pitch in. And the machine stopped me short. I think in this case the machine harmed itself and harmed the cause.
I understand why the poll was rejected: it was because of the Nazi-association. OEN policy states that Nazi- association is an overused insult because Nazis were evil people who tortured, performed genocide and also were lawless. Supposefully, the usage of any analogy to them in the debate would be counterproductive because people would consider that as an extreme and shut themselves down on conversation. That's the perception. And that's a policy. I respect it.
At the same time I would like to argue that the policy above reflects a rather deep level of ignorance of the American populace about the events and human features of the WWII as well as even deeper ignorance in the areas of distinguishing between human psychology and ideology; those two types of ignorance are uniquely nourished in the US due to the two specific and unique features of this society: the overwhelming selloff of Christian values and nuclear bombardment of Japan.
It is not my goal here to go deeper into the root cause analysis on why the machine rejected my poll. I just want to mention the following: the machine consider the Nazis formally as people who did something bad, so bad that they became an " unholy ghost- nation of bad people', the characters that did not seem to belong to any nation or a class, who somehow did all those atrocious things and who have nothing to do with us, good, loving, compassionate Americans ( yes, it is only in America because throughout the world such denial -- based approach would be considered as bizarre, to say the least- MS). The policy insists that no matter what and how we do here- we are not even close to those evil ghosts; we have nothing to do with it; that's what the machine reflects, catering to the American Psyche. Or maybe to the American Psycho?
Nazism is a state of mind which assigned itself to the political movement. The actual functioning of it, the practical realization in Hitler's Germany was its final stage, the stage when it transferred from the psyche to ideology, from an individual feature to the disease of the masses, the same way the virus can wake up in the carrier and transfer to other people like a fire. That's when we see it open and clear and then it is a disaster to all. But in its everyday form Nazism is a state of mind and it is within everyone of us. It is one of our character features and each of us carries it: liberal and conservative, Mitt and Barack, white and black, Christian, Jew, or Moslem. We are related to Hitler as Thomas Mann put it. In its rudimentary description internal Nazism is the self- preference of the world of LIE over the world of the TRUTH as well as active desire to fortify that LIE at any cost on one and only one basis only- what's good for me is good for everyone. Nazism is the grotesque totem of selfishness, the little Ayn Rand buzzing in your head: you, you, you, only you. And if you turn on the TV and just try hear at least one clear message through all that GOP howling, this is what you will hear:
Love yourself, adore yourself, admire yourself- it is good for you and we are here to help you do it ( for a fee, of course- MS).
That's Nazism, folks. It is awake and stares at you. It is legitimized in the GOP methodology to deliver their message.
People who did atrocities are called Nazis by us due to what they did. But in reality they had Nazism in themselves and let it go rampant when the environment made it possible. Our environment here, in the US ( and I hope here we agree) is very much comfortable for the development of the virus of Nazism: I would argue that it is the most nourishing environment in years. I think the virus will not miss the opportunity; it is the country of opportunity after all.
We are all simple people and we crave easy answers. Those answers are there for us always: they all start with the premise that you are the salt of the Earth, that you are a very good person, that there are people there that do not want you to succeed or you would be as rich as those who deliver the message: they look exactly like you. The temptation is great: whether those messengers are proponents of German race or proponents of the wisdom of the Rich- they all offer you the hope of the belonging and supremacy; they all are optimistic. You like them. You follow them. You surely imagine yourself being like them. You adopt the model. And then you become a Nazi.
So I repeat my challenge to the good authors of OEN: please, if any of you feel capable of writing a deep analysis paper on the topic I had just explained, do that. To jump start this effort I would like to refer to two sources:
- In the movie " Life is Beautiful' there is a scene when Italians read from the new math textbook ( actually a real one- MS) for the second grade:
-Evert mentally disabled person in Germany costs about 30 marks a day. There are about 300000 of those in the country. How much money annually would the German nation save if all those people were compassionately euthanized?'
