THE SECRET OF STAYING ETERNALLY YOUNG

by Allen L Roland

Tell A Friend

This short essay by Samuel Ullman captures the secret of staying eternally young and the benefits of living with a childlike, joyful and grateful heart . It is only then that you can celebrate the true gift and delight of yourself ~ as I most certainly do : Allen L Roland

" Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.

We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self- distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living.

In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and women and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at Ninety. "

Of course, one of the surest ways of staying eternally young is completely opening your heart in relationship ~ and here is the proven cure ~ http://myrelationshipcure.com/

I disagree with extreme prejudice.

William Blake had it right years ago.  At first we are innocent, then we become experienced.  A precious few discover they joys of looking at experience with the recovered innocent eyes of youth.  Like children again, they have no self-image whatsoever.

COMMENT

John, I believe it was William Blake who wrote ~ " We are put on earth a little space to bear the beams of love " and it is said that he died singing songs to his wife . As such, an excellent example of being eternally young because of his exuberant and fully open heart.

Eternal is relative

Think mortality.  Unless we are totally misguided we know our time in history is short.  (I can't speak for the "immortal" crowd.) Youth, code word for optimism/love, means being willing to go out with your boots on.

The human condition--to be whole--means giving as good as you get.  Who gives what is a personal matter, but it takes creativity.  A painter could stay at his easel, communing only with his muse but still giving to generations.  But when it comes to interpersonal relations, I quite agree.  One has to relate to the younger crowd to remain fulfilled.  There is no reason why any adult cannot relate to those who see the universe as good and fun.  Catch them before they are old enough to drive or date, and like as not you have a lifelong friend.

As time slips by, one has a memory bank of generational happenings.  For the moment I concentrate of that Boomer generation.  Poor kids, they were fractious during Viet Nam and more so during Iraq, and now it's time for Social Security and vanishing 401Ks.  In my remaining years, maybe I can help them  understand that they can look to those younger than themselves.  It's not the economy, stupid!  It's think out of the box--hug a kid, teach a kid.  It's posterity!

Secrets

There are no secrets for staying young.  If someone gave older adults progress slips like the teachers did in my kids' preschools, the eternally young older peoples' would read the same as they did when they were in preschool:   happy and active.

I live in a 55+ community and see those who are happy and active and those who are not.  The ones who are not usually die 'young' and have 10 people show up at their funeral.  Those who are live a long time and their funerals are big community affairs.

Every day I see 60 to 80 year olds that can outplay you in tennis or chess, and can talk you down on any subject.  They read, they go places, they learn new things, they work out, they play, they create, they love, etc.  Sunday, I saw two 70-75 year old men hit a softball over 250 feet out of the park.  They were smiling.  We were cheering for them and for ourselves.

Life is full of choices.  If you make bad ones, bad things can happen to you.  That doesn't change as you get older.   Choose to be active physically, mentally and spirtually throughout your life and you will have a much better chance to live a long life.  A happy life.

Anyone for a game of pickleball in the morning?  I will kick your butt.  :-)
