So there was Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee for president standing before the "Wailing Wall", eyes closed, skull cap on his head, praying before the Jews most sacred site in Jerusalem on Sunday.
Romney wasn't in Israel making some sort of religious pilgrimage connecting his Mormonism with the Jewish faith. No, he was there touting his foreign policy chops telling his audience of 300 that America's "highest national security priority" is preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon emphasizing "no option is off the table". He added, "We must not delude ourselves that containment is an option" and "we have a solemn duty and moral imperative to deny Iran's leaders the means to follow through on their malevolent intentions."
Dan Senor, Romney's senior foreign policy aide went further intimating "Romney was ready to support a unilateral military strike by Israel."
Well so much for the idea that candidates refrain from spouting their ideas on American foreign policy on foreign soil.
By the way Romney's entourage included billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, the CEO of the National Beef Company John Miller, Paul Singer, founder of a $20 billion hedge fund all there to attend today's $50,000 per couple fund raiser expecting to garner some $5 million, chump change really considering the hundreds of millions that have already poured into the Romney campaign from these well heeled donors these past few months. Yeah there's nothing like being surrounded by a few close billionaire friends to pal around with and make one feel at home.
Looking at this latest political gambit from Romney in Israel and earlier hearing the other horrific idiocy emanating from the mouths of all the other fallen Republican presidential pretenders in this ongoing travesty that is the latest U.S. presidential extravaganza now pitting Romney, who hasn't seen a war he doesn't like and is itching to start a new one with Iran and Barack Obama, the current "assassinator in chief" who wants another four years apparently to distance himself further from the man who won in a 2008 landslide with "change you can believe in", just what else must the American people have to endure?
Not only has there been no change you can believe in but policy's that have compounded the worst of the Bush era excesses i.e. expanded drone attacks and missile strikes, assassinations (even American citizens) authorized solely by the president, continued rendition and indefinite detention of suspects, broadened prosecution of government whistleblowers, the continued madness of the war on terror and all made "legal" by additional secret Justice Department memos justifying anything the president does but withheld from public disclosure in the name of national security.
All this mayhem from Barack Obama and Mitt Romney as the only other viable alternative to sit in the Oval Office come next January.
That's not an alternative; it's a prescription for America to continue its ignominious slide into empire and worldwide hegemony, with an oligarchy of plutocrats usurping our electoral system and with it our representative democracy leading the country toward eventual ruin.
Sadly, it doesn't have to be this way, BUT unless the American people can rise up in rebellion against this coup of their country, we will suffer the fate of all the other hubristic empires on the dung heap of history.
