For OpEdNews: scott creighton - Writer I was about to put up another video here, when while having a chat with a family member, something very sinister occurred to me (not like that doesn't happen all the time; just check out my site). The video was filmed on Oct. 26 2008 and it went straight up on Youtube. They must have burned the midnight oil on the editing. The video was, yet again, another in a series of racist rants from some people waiting in line outside a McCain rally. These videos are a dime a dozen now and I don't think any of them can compare with the classic "Obama-Monkey Guy" which will surely rank that asshole up there with "Leave Britney Alone Guy" and "Chocolate Rain Guy" (a grouping I am sure will please the racist bastard to no end). I ran an article on that video and posted it like many other liberal/democratic sites did, simply because it was just shocking to say the least. Now don't get me wrong, racism is a big problem in this country, especially now. I certainly haven't got to go into details on that.
But let's face it; if this fact surprises you at this point, you are probably a middle-class white educated suburbanite living in your deed-restricted bubble, shopping in your heavily guarded malls, and you rarely ever watch anything but Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann. It's out there, in many different colors and forms. Just like it has been for a long time. And when the economy gets worse, so does racism. It bubbles to the surface like that green stuff at the beginning of every zombie movie, that just seems to come from nowhere and turns normal people into brain eating, inarticulate monsters.
So, what was that sinister thought I had while watching this video of abject racism? Very simple; why go looking for it and who do these videos really help?
Why are there groups of Obama supporters out there on a cold day in Ohio, standing across the street from a bunch of McCain supporters, carrying signs and chanting "Change" loudly? What is the purpose of that? Do they really think that hearing the word "Change" is going to create some catharsis in these people and they will fall to their knees weeping? Do they really think that their presence there will help Obama win the election somehow?
Of course not. Don't be silly.
The answer to the question lies in the presence of the camera crews. They are there, chanting loudly, in order to frustrate certain elements of that crowd and then get them on camera, responding in the only way they know how; racist, bigoted rants.
That is why the Obama supporters and their cameras are there and that is what they are doing.
Now the real question is "why?".
Videos of ranting uneducated people are not going to win the election for Obama. Let's make that clear right now.
No one is going to change their minds about voting republican because they see some Youtube highlight reel of KKK members acting like idiots. They already know racists and they already know idiots. So the "hold a mirror to society" theory doesn't really cut it.
And if you think that black America needs a bunch of middle-class white activists to show them what racism looks like, you have been living under a rock for quite sometime and you need to get out somewhere that doesn't take American Express occasionally to get a different perspective. I would suggest the 9th Ward for starters. And then just go where the spirit moves you.
So here we are again with the same question. Why keep going to these rallies, baiting the natives into racist rants if the purpose isn't really to help Obama win?
Well, you aren't going to like the potential answers, I'll tell you that.
