Politics Most Stupid Move Becomes The Most Booed: Palin Curse Hits Philly

Tell A Friend

Philadelphia Flyers owner and major Republican donor, Ed Snider piped in the loudest music he could, but it couldn’t camouflage the Philly boos snowing down on Republican VP nominee, Sarah Palin. In what will be known forever in Philly history as the Palin Curse, it set the scene for one of the Flyers' worst opening night, opening period performances ever as they found themselves down to the New York Rangers, 4-0 before the first period was over.

In what should have been a sweet, memorable moment for Philadelphian Kathy O'Connell, voted the Flyers top hockey mom, Snider forced O’Connell to become part of a national embarrassment when Palin was bought onto the ice next to her accompanied by a barrage of boos from the Philly faithful.

Congrats McCain campaign. Mess up a wet dream? You even ruined a home team's opening night. Sure, the New York Rangers helped, but it HEAR/SEE THE UNCAMOUFLAGED BOOING VIDEO EVIDENCE HERE

It's always easier to think of responses in hindsight.  She's probably kicking herself. . .

Blame Ed Snider. He Brought In Sarah Palin

Don't blame Kathy O'Connell. After all, she was voted the Flyers top hockey mom; thus, as such, had to appear at center ice for the dropping of the first puck of the season home opener. Instead, blame Flyers owner Ed Snider for putting politics ahead of his own team by inviting Alaska Governor and GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin to join Mrs. O'Connell on center ice.

Snider's actions were an embarrassment not only to the top hockey mom, but also to the team itself, as they lost their home opener to the New York Rangers. Ego vs. the Flyers and their fans; that's what Snider's stunt exposed. He knew what the fans were like; they were that way for some three decades - beginning with the days of the Broad Street Bullies in the 1970's all the way to the present season. The only icon these fans had never booed at home games was the late Kate Smith, whom they had adopted as their own. He should have known that Governor Palin would be received the same way as Santa had been every year around the Christmas season - with very loud boos.

Politics and sports do not mix. Snider - as a GOP supporter and donor - should have kept his support for the McCain/Palin ticket outside of the Wachovia Center and just given a $2300 contribution to the campaign, instead of antagonizing the core Flyers base who, BTW, adored their team and considered outside icons (with the exception of Kate Smith) as intruders - Sarah Palin no exception. His bringing in Sarah Palin to join Kathy O'Connell in dropping the first puck embarrassed both participants as well as the team.
