POLITICO's recent specious article saying that "Dean not a contender for health secretary" by Stephen Fox Page 1 of 2 page(s) |

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1108/15608.html I find this article to be totally specious, in fact no more than a corporate journalist's hatchet job! Not even qualifying or identifying the sources makes it more of a "run it up the flag pole and see who doesn't salute" kind of story, as such: bad journalism and even worse politics.... I believe Dr. Dean is still very much in the running for HHS. The fact is that American's health needs someone of his caliber as HHS Secretary, and face it: THERE ISN'T ANYONE ELSE OF HIS CALIBER AROUND. Abrasive with Congress? So what? That is what I would want in a Cabinet member, especially one dealing with the most corporate-abused regulatory apparatus in the USA: the FDA. Besides, have you ever noticed that many of the brightest people seem abrasive to those who are less cerebrally endowed?
Anyway, I don't want to see a Congressional Schmooze at FDA. Not even Dr. Von Eschenbach, a urologist who came to the FDA after being Director of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, who perpetuated the Corporate Manipulation of the FDA, was any kind of "Congressional Schmooze," as if that meant anything in the context of Cabinet selections....
Either Politico.com has some very trivial and/or superficial sources, or they are trying to spin some political realities of their own, which as a Journalist and Editor myself, I understand but don't respect at all. I think POLITICO ought to write a new article that is 90% fact and 10% speculation, instead of the other way around.
And oh, but of course; while there is that vast concern and profound interest right now over Cabinet choices among the arm chair pundits and Wednesday morning quarterbacks, that doesn't justify abandoning all pretext at accuracy in the journalistic quarters.
If these are credible sources, without giving away their identities, POLITICO could qualify or explain their level of credibility and their credentials, eh?
Similarly, another pundit-type source said Bill Richardson, New Mexico's Governor, was being considered for Interior Secretary. I know Richardson well, and am certain that he would only consider Secretary of State to leave the New Mexico Govenor's Chair; he would be a damned good Secretary of State at that, better in my opinion, than other names like Colin Powell (who I personally don't believe deserves any Cabinet seat at all, unless Obama is prepared to abandon much of the international credibility he has amassed thus far), John Kerry, Richard Lugar, Hillary Clinton, Richard Holbrooke, or Al Gore (although I must admit the Washington Post Editorial to that effect two days ago was very convincing)
But don't just listen to me!
Sluggo wrote a terse and inarticulate comment on the Politico article:
Dean is not a contender for anything.
DefeatBushMcCain replied:
You couldn't be more wrong. Without Howard Dean there would be no Barack Obama.
Howard Dean created the template for Barack Obama's election to the presidency. He created a grassroots organization for his primary run for President in 2004 and he inspired folks just as Barack Obama did.
The difference is that Obama ran after six years of Republican failure and when the tide had turned against the far right agenda of Bush and the failed Republican party.

Topic on Bush and Iraq war
People are still talking about Bush and Iraq war. I thin this topic should be finished for today. by Ashin Mettacara (67 articles, 14 quicklinks, 23 diaries, 74 comments) on Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 at 6:19:16 AM

Reply: Getting a little autocratic, aren't we? Iraq War is not over

Reply: and why shouldn't they continue to talk about this war,

Thanks for this about Howard Dean, Stephen Fox.
I not only contributed to Doctor Howard Dean's presidential campaign, I'm a member here at OEN. As a result of that membership, I received and read Rob Kall's newsletter to members yesterday, containing a mention of his support for Dean for Director of HHS. And as a result of that mention, I made out a small check to "Op Ed News" and I intend to mail it tomorrow. Let's hope the rumors are true, and let's hope fervently that Barak Obama has the smarts to appoint Howard Dean his Director of the Department of Health and Human Services. by GLloyd Rowsey (104 articles, 65 quicklinks, 60 diaries, 828 comments [4 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 at 8:44:48 AM

Reply: Bravo! that's the spirit and response I hoped for....
when I wrote this article. It is an old lawyer trick: deliver bad news on a Friday so you can ruin their weekend, and then Monday, they will be more cooperative, having sweat bullets over the weekend. What is amazing is that Huffington Post and MSNBC picked up this article, and by doing so, it becomes 'GOSPEL TRUTH, mired in wet concrete." Enunciating your Cabinet choices is one thing, but speculating as this Politico article did is really wrong. I prefer to trust Obama's choices and to wait and see what they are, not advance some corporate driven drivel right out of the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal, where this Politico author used to work. We have to have higher standards in journalism, speaking as a journalist and as an editor! by Stephen Fox (96 articles, 3 quicklinks, 11 diaries, 802 comments [33 recommended, 1 rejected]) on Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 at 10:14:02 AM

Politico article shows malcreant media power to misconstrue!
I am glad also that this was posted, but the damage is partially done and very hard to correct. Next week will reveal what position Dr. Dean should get, and that is Obama's decision, not some hatchet job writer for Politico to determine! Dr. Dean got trashed by conservative media after his perfectly normal yell in Iowa, and I don't want to see this continue to happen, wherein corporate media takes on our brightest and most able politicians and dumps rancor and idiocy on them to titillate and mislead the masses. by Eliot Gould (16 articles, 0 quicklinks, 28 diaries, 200 comments [3 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 at 10:23:04 AM

nice alliteration!
Truly, the media has enormous power, and if someone has an axe to grind, like a corporate melange with a few pals in the ranks of journalists, they can do enormous damage. Those with the educators' axe to grind, i.e., those trying to teach something through their writings, well, that's fine by me. How else would we progress without the educators? by Eliot Gould (16 articles, 0 quicklinks, 28 diaries, 200 comments [3 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 at 11:13:24 AM

Media Sales Representatives of Political Power
Until change comes and restores the Real Journalism, we may still continue dealing with facts that are not well founded to represent reality. More than anybody, Dean deserves the best post in Obama's administration. Why? Two main reasons: first he was able to bring change to DNC by creating a winning plan to Show Up Everywhere Strengthen State Parties and the Grassroots Focus on Core values Take advantage of cutting Edge Technologies Train Tomorrow’s Leaders Second, he's the required experienced and he's medical doctor who worked hard for his patients in healthcare. Those who criticize Dean need to educate themselves and come with stronger, more convincing arguments that state the contrary. by Lydia Kopere Patterson (6 articles, 0 quicklinks, 1 diaries, 154 comments) on Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 at 1:21:04 PM

Reply: Yes, Dean deserves the best, but for him, what is the best?
After four years of stressful politics to the max as DNC chairman, I would think a physician would want to get back to Medicine. It will be a telling appointment, both HHS and FDA actually, because if Obama appoints a real consumer protectionist for both jobs, we will improve as a Nation health wise. If not, NOT. It is really just that simple. Watch this appointment, as it involves far more than giving the job to someone who can sweet talk both Houses of Congress into supporting Obama's Health Plans, which I am sure are his highest priorities. My highest priorities are protecting the American public from corporate mendacity at the FDA, as well as any and all other nations' citizens' health, since they rely on the BS Mythologies of the "FDA's integrity," and other such malarkey. by Eliot Gould (16 articles, 0 quicklinks, 28 diaries, 200 comments [3 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 at 2:47:58 PM

Thanks, everyone, for such intelligent and vigorous posts!
I really appreciate it, and hope we are developing a longer dialogue about these clearly vital matters, which few Americans seems to know about and even fewer seem to care about! by Stephen Fox (96 articles, 3 quicklinks, 11 diaries, 802 comments [33 recommended, 1 rejected]) on Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 at 2:57:40 PM
