Now is the Time to Extend Unemployment Benefits

America is in the midst of a recession largely attributable to the economic policies of the Bush administration and the Republican party.  As a result of this recession, millions of hard working Americans have been put out of work.  Almost every family in this country has been touched by the current recession.  On top of this, consumers are being forced to pay record high gas prices and hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes due to foreclosure.  Now is not the time to cut tax paying American citizens off of their unemployment benefits.

Since the beginning of this year, nearly 325,000 people have lost their jobs and the unemployment rate is rising.  As of May the unemployment rate stands at 5.5%, up nine percent just since April.  With the cost of gas, food and medicine many families are suffering.

As a candidate for federal office I support House Resolution 5749, the Emergency Extended Unemployment Compensation Act, which will provide an additional thirteen weeks of extended unemployment benefits in most states.  This means that 3.8 million citizens will continue to receive benefits through March of 2009. I fully support the intentions of this legislation and would support companion legislation in the US Senate if elected to public office.  It is only the first step towards a clear path out of the current economic recession, but it is a sign to the American people that our representatives and those candidates who are running for office believe that the government is there to serve the people.

We know that families are suffering right now under the high cost of food, medicine, fuel, housing and other basic goods. The reason that we are in this economic crisis is clear.  The Bush tax cuts which provided tax breaks for billionaires and wall street bailouts have broken the back of the American treasury.  Hundreds of billions of dollars thrown down a hole in Iraq has not helped the situation any further and the mushrooming federal deficit, which currently stands at nine trillion dollars, have all played their role in the current situation.

It is clear that what is needed are policies and legislation which supports working families and puts Americans to work.   Now is not the time to take away unemployment benefits for people who have worked hard and contributed.  The cost of extended these benefits is just a sliver of the billions we are wasting on death and destruction in Iraq.  Let's reinvest in America and let' start by investing in the American people.  By doing so we will ensure a more secure and prosperous future for everyone.

My name is Chris Lugo and I am a candidate for the US Senate seat in Tennessee. I am running as a progressive because I believe that the time has come to end the war in Iraq, ensure that all Americans have access to affordable, quality health care and to restore common sense and decency to our national dialogue. For far too long we have neglected the needs of the poor in America, allowing hundreds of thousands in Tennessee to go without healthcare and millions nationally. For far too long we have let our education system be a secondary priority to the military industrial complex. As a result of these misguided funding priorities we have a graduation rate in Tennessee of only about 60% statewide for high school students and only about one quarter of all Tennesseans graduate from college. We must take solid steps to ensure that all Americans have safe and affordable housing, that we live in a clear and healthy environment, and that we take steps to address the deep divisions of inequity that still persist in our society. I believe in the American dream and I believe that all Americans deserve the opportunity to have a rich and meaningful life, but the only way to ensure that these priorities are addressed is to make certain that our government makes this a priority, that our elected representatives make peace and social justice a priority on a national scale. We are at a crossroads in history, and Tennessee faces a choice which we all face. Do we choose to continue down the path of abandonment, of hopelessness and fear or do we choose to embrace the compassionate, hopeful elements of our national identity? I for one, choose to hope. I believe that the government is here to serve the people and our elected leaders are here to serve you.

Did you ever ask yourself how did we get here?

While I am sure you whole heartedly feel for those family who are hurting let me point out you are only making matter worse by supporting this bill. You see were exactly do you think your going to get that extra money to help these people out? If you said create it out of thin air you would be correct. Since this just adds more dollars to the national supply you of course make everyone else's money worth less. This would be better known as inflation which for some unknown reason politicans can't seem to understand why the dollar is lossing value. It is not the fact that food and oil are expensive for no reason; rather the dollar is just worth less and less each day due to the insane, completely out of touch spending that is going with our Federal government. We are in the position we are in right now due to out of control spending, artifically low interest rates; wars, Wall Street bailouts all of which destory the value of the dollar. Instead of fixing mistakes with more mistakes could you look into a bill provides real solutions to our problems. Thanks.

Conservative prolife anti-death penalty tree hugger. Believe that less government is good government, government cannot solve anyone's personal problems, the government taking money from one group of people and giving it to another group of people is a crime, and that people should take responsibility for their own lives.

What is the unemployment level?

Hasn't the unemployment level been at very low levels during the past 3-4 years? Contrary to what you read in the unbiased media our unemployment rate is in good shape*. It is even lower than the during the Clinton years when we did not hear calls for extending unemployment years and it is way lower than during the Carter years when we did. We will never achieve 0% unemployment. Most economists agree that functional full employment is somewhere between 2-7%. To extend unemployment benefits during periods of full or almost full employment is counterproductive and just a ridiculous political ploy.

* Latest .5% rise? Student unemployment jumped by 3% for some reason. That explained most of the rise. That is not a big deal at this time of the year. McDonald's is still hiring around here at rates well over the minimum wage because of We Verify.

Disagree

I was on unemployment once.

The only thing that got me off my ass was the unemployment ended.
