Mahatma Gandhi's famous seven blunders of the world, which he shared with his grandson Arun,  on their final day together before Gandhi was assassinated, are actually nine with an addition by both Arun and myself: Allen L Roland

Here is  a list of the seven blunders of the world which Mahatma Gandhi gave to his grandson Arun Gandhi, written on a piece of paper, on their final day together, not too long before his assassination.

This list grew from Gandhi's search for the roots of violence. He called these acts of passive violence. Preventing these is the best way to prevent oneself or one's society from reaching a point of violence.

To the original list of seven, Arun Gandhi added an eighth blunder, rights without responsibilities and I, in honor of the 60th anniversary of Gandhi's death add a ninth, Power without Benevolence ~ which has been much in evidence with the Cheney/Bush administration.

Actually, the Bush administration has made all nine of these blunders.

Here is Gandhi's original list of seven with the additions;

1. Wealth without work

2. Pleasure without conscience

3.
Knowledge without character

4.  Commerce without morality

5. Science without humanity

6. Worship without sacrifice

7. Politics without principle

8. Rights without Responsibilities ( Arun Gandhi )

9. Power without Benevolence ( Allen L Roland )

COMMENT

With shameless greed at the helm, neither We the People nor the defenseless planet stand a chance.

Don't underestimate the universal urge to unite and the ultimate power of the people ~ change happens but, quite often, it happens very slowly ~ However,  it will be a noticeable change with the election of Barack Obama.

#10 Governance without Rational Thinking

Ah I risk a lot by suggesting an addition to what Mahatma Gandhi said, for I respect him so much, but you know if he were here, he would probably enjoy healthy intellectual exploration. I would discuss with him the possibility of adding to the list of blunders.
#10 Governance without Rational Thinking
Bush seems to go by a Principles in his governance. Some examples that he appears to use are:  "It's good to spread democracy into all countries." (even if it has to be forced)   and, "If we give enough tax breaks to the super rich, it will trickle down to everyone."  and,  "It is okay for the President to ignore the Constitution in a time of war." (or occupation)
Rational thinking would make one get a headache at the principle "It's good to spread democracy into all countries." (even if it has to be forced) Some may not have the security systems to make it work, or, the majority of the people may advocate violent overthrough of neighbors... or, the costs in lives, money and wars may mean the best thing for us to do is lead by example; show how good our democracy is in ways that people might want to imitate it. Of course, the other examples could be explored in a similar manner.
Bush seems to go by unwavering principles believing that if he just sticks to it, it will work someday. He has even stated that history will show his principles were right-- even if it's not within our lifetime.
I remember when I took courses to obtain a teaching credential. They taught us that the number one thing in educating is not just the accumulation of facts and knowledge, but the achievement of the ability of rational thinking.
If we elect 'representatives' perhaps we should evaluate whether they will govern by principles or by rational thinking. And, if it's the former, they must at least disclose all the principles they will diligently enforce-- rather than surprise us with them when we least expect it.
