Obama hasn’t gotten me excited yet. I wish he had. And I hope he does, because I truly want to be excited about the Democratic nominee.

I just can’t help it if I feel that he pales in comparison to the ethics, morality and intelligence of my first choice for the past two presidential elections, Dennis Kucinich.

But I know I would feel better if I could find something about Obama's campaign to really feel good about. It’s not that I think he wouldn’t make a good president. I'm sure he will. Lawd knows, things can only get better from where we are now—there are some advantages to following the worst president in history. And I believe it’s high time that a person of color sat in the Oval Office.

But I just can’t help it if my soul isn’t thrilled to pieces, yet.

Even finding out that I am probably related to Obama didn’t set off any fireworks for me. But as my dad quipped nonchalantly, our family is probably related to everyone, by now.

Like my own grandmother, Obama’s grandmother is a Payne. Her lineage goes back to Virginia, at about the same time that my ancestors, John and Mary Payne lived there. John and Mary were the parents of First Lady Dolley Payne Todd Madison. So, of far more importance than my possible genealogical connection to Obama, is the intriguing possibility that he may be related to a former First Lady.

I guess I could talk myself into getting more interested in Michelle as First Lady. I really like her intelligence and her attitude, and she'd be a breath of fresh air compared to her stuffy predecessor.

I am enthused about having kids in the White House, and the effect that the youthful energy of Obama’s daughters could have on healing the nation. And whether Obama or McCain claims the Oval Office, there will be at least one child of color living in the White House, and that will be a refreshing change.

And I could get excited about Obama’s choice for V.P., depending on whom he selects.

I’m so profoundly disappointed in Hillary that the possibility of having her on the Obama ticket is horrifying. I used to like Bill a lot, and cared not a whit about his blue dresses and cigars. But since all the mud slinging between the Clintons and Obama, ole’ Bill has dropped down a considerable number of notches, in my view.

I suppose that Joe Biden or Chris Dodd or Chuck Hagel would be fine, they just wouldn’t light my fire.

And while I haven’t seen her name mentioned, I could get excited about Congresswoman Maxine Waters as VP. But I don’t think this country is ready for an all African-American ticket, yet.

What little research I’ve done on Gov. Kathleen Sevelius has me intrigued, so I guess, if forced to choose, she’d be my pick of the litter.

I do absolutely love the idea of a woman VP, and I don’t mean just a person with a woman’s body. Condi Rice qualifies for that, and so does Hillary, but where’s the heart?

What I want is a REAL woman for VP. One with charisma, intelligence, vision, and compassion, along with strong, feminine wisdom.

Meryl Ann Butler is an artist, author and educator who counts First Lady Dolley Payne Todd Madison as well as two signers of the Articles of Confederation among her ancestors. Mary Ball, mother of George Washington is in the ancestral lineage of Butler's great grandmother, Blanche Ball. Grateful to know that the blood of America's founding mothers and fathers runs in her veins, Butler has been newly filled with matriotism as a direct result of the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. Lest she appear too uppity, it should be revealed that she also has family ties to James Butler Hickok, better known as Wild Bill. Butler has been actively engaged in utilizing the arts as stepping-stones toward joy-filled enlightenment for the past two decades. A native of NYC, her response to 9-11 was to pen an invitation to healing through creativity, entitled, "90-Minute Quilts: 15+ Projects You Can Stitch in an Afternoon" (Krause 2006). They don't call quilts "comforters" for nothing! www.90minutequilts.com Butler was faculty advisor for "The Love for All Mankind/Anti-Apartheid Quilt" project at ENMU (1993), now in the collection of the Hon. Nelson Mandela. As Arts Advisor for the Center for Improving U.S.- Soviet Relations (CIUSSR) Baltimore, MD; her activities included the "First U.S.-Soviet Childrens' Peace Quilt Exchange" (1987-88), an historic project chronicled in the media of both countries. Citizen diplomacy trips to the U.S.S.R. in 1987 and 1988 included lectures and presentations to fashion designers, craftspeople and artists in Odessa, Moscow, Kiev and St.Petersburg, in which she focused on the topic of creating global peace through international art exchanges. Butler is the proud mother of a daughter and seven stepchildren (all grown), and a passel o' grand younguns. It is to these new generations that she dedicates her political activism. Interesting

I doubt Caroline wants the job, although she might fit all the criteria.

She's female and if he opts for any woman other than Hillary, there will be all kinds of screaming from Hill supporters and the press: If he picked a woman why not Hillary? Outrageous! They'll make anyone who's positive into a giant negative.

I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal over the veep pick; two days after the announcement he/she will be stale news, and no one votes yea or nay on president because of the veep.

The press will make a big deal of it for a few days, because it's easier than covering the nitty-gritty non-sexy stuff, and forget about it immediately unless they can find some dirt on the candidate.

I decided long ago that I'd vote for Obama even though the shine on his armor has been tarnished by a couple of Senate votes and his moving to the center on some issues; his choice of v.p. won't change my mind

Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny

Articles like the above presume that it makes a difference whether Mr./Mrs. X or Y will be elected for president / VP. In reality, the "men in the shadows" rule, and all the election buzz is a large scale theatre play, staged to make people believe that some sort of "democracy" exists. Believing the president and / or the VP has any saying (against the will of the money lords) is the same as believing in the real existence of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Better wake up to reality!

Concur completely

But not many here will notice. They're too blind, too much in denial, too whatever it is that will keep them from taking the necessary steps to actually do something because doing something to really change this dismal situation would take them out of their comfort zone. They'd have to get dirty and most of the people are too cowardly to do that. It's much easier to keep pretending that if we just got a Democrat in office we could get a foot-hold and start making things right.

Reminds me of the old fable of the dog and snake crossing a river. They're snakes, they'll always be snakes and they'll always bite you.

Bloodline

"As far as being related to Obama, you might be lucky if you aren't. They say he and Dick Cheney are distant cousins."

Is this JUST another coincidence?  Different explanation might be that the elite groom their future puppets.  If the elite want to groom their future presidents, where would they look?  Vast majority of the time it would be from their family bloodline.  That is how it has been done for centuries so no reason they would not do it today.  Loyalty is key to obedience.  Like the mafia.

John Kerry is also related to George Bush.  People should look at what the probabilities are of this occuring.  Than use common sense and logic to determine whether there is a conspiracy.  There are many more of these relational ties among powerful people.

Kansas isn't just next to Missouri anymore

I go for Sibelius, too. But maybe stronger than Meryl Ann. Thinking geography and demography here.

Governor Kathleen started passing out flyers in Ohio at her father's knee. Ohio is an important state. In Kansas, her husband and his family have political name recognition. Her bragging point is that she was reelected for a second term as a Democrat.

But, best, she's a great speaker and folksy enough to make people listen and savvy enough to know where and when to throw out a little barb. Mostly on the geography thing, we want a middle America type. This is, IMHO, a middle America year. Also it doesn't hurt to have someone in the Beltway who understands what governors go through in these tough times.

As a Kansan

I broach the idea of "our Kathleen" as veep with mixed emotions.  She is doing such a great job as our Governor, working with a Legislature that is almost entirely Republican and keeping our poor state perking along while others fail.  She would also be a wonderful choice for vice-president.  First, she would be helpful with the electorate since she is the daughter of a former Governor of Ohio, and she has proven herself to be an excellent administrator.  The choice lies with Obama but the people of Kansas are very proud of her either way.

Thanks for both your comments, Mary and Margaret

–now I am even more eager to find out more about Sibelius. And while I wouldn’t want to kidnap your governor, Mary, that is exactly the kind of politician I would want for VP and for any other position – one that doesn’t want to be given up by the populace they serve. What an endorsement!

Women's movement has been set back.

I think she would make an excellent choice, but I cant help but feel that the current icons (Pelosi, Hillary) of women politicians have done much to set the movement back decades (especially Pelosi).  Her lack of willingness to enforce the constitution has hampered every effort Kucinich has tried to make in protecting the american people from moving ever closer to a police state.  Her actions make it appear that she is dipping from the same pocket as Bush.  I am with you when you say Dennis Kucinich is the best choice for president. He's one of a very few congressman I trust.  He is still pushing for impeachment. He is asking for a million signatures to be dilivered on Sept 10. You'll find the official petition on his website http://kucinich.us/

Why feel compelled to support the Democratic candidate???

Particularly when the Democratic candidate is NOT Dennis Kucinich??  Isn't that, by itself, an indictment of the Democratic Party's worth???  Maybe it's time we just told the Democratic Party to take a hike, by voting Green.

I'm all for genealogy, but I'm a seventh cousin to W., and anyone who thinks that I ought to support him in consequence has to be insane.  Besides, if the romance of distant cousinship is supposed to impell us to like someone, shouldn't  it work both ways?  What has W. done to support me, his own cousin???  (Less than nothing, I assure you.)  What has Obama done to support you, honey, or do you happen to like the war in Iraq and retroactive immunity for telecoms who assisted with illegal wiretapping?

That's my point

Well, Jill, that’s exactly my point, sorry if I wasn’t clear. I don’t feel compelled to support the Democratic candidate, I was just wistfully wishing I was inspired to. And even a longshot genealogy connection doesn’t do it, as I inferred. (Though I DO think it's an interesting piece of trivia if Obama is related to Dolley! She was a firecracker, that one!) I am also related to Wild Bill Hickok, although I wouldn’t vote for him for president, either. Unless, perhaps, his running mate was Caroline Kennedy.

I'm glad to hear you escaped any ill effects of being related to the "W".

Look what I just found in my INBOX!

Dear Caroline,

We've never met, so I hope you don't find this letter too presumptuous or inappropriate. As its contents involve the public's business, I am sending this to you via the public on the Internet. I knew your brother John. He was a great guy, and I know he would've had a ball during this thrilling and historic election year. We all miss him dearly.

Barack Obama selected you to head up his search for a vice presidential candidate. It appears we may be just days (hours?) away from learning who that choice will be.

The media is reporting that Senator Obama has narrowed his alternatives to three men: Joe Biden, Evan Bayh and Tim Kaine. They're all decent fellows, but they are far from the core of what the Obama campaign has been about: Change. Real change. Out with the old. And don't invade countries that pose no threat to us.

Senators Biden and Bayh voted for that invasion and that war, the war Barack ran against, the war Barack reminded us was the big difference between him and Senator Clinton because she voted for the war and he spoke out against it while running for Senate (a brave and bold thing to do back in 2002).

For Obama to place either of these senators on the ticket would be a huge blow to the millions that chose him in the primaries over Hillary. He will undercut one of the strongest advantages he has over the Hundred-Year War senator, Mr. McCain. By anointing a VP who did what McCain did in throwing us into this war, Mr. Obama will lose the moral high ground in the debates.

As for Governor Kaine of Virginia, his big problem is, well, Obama's big problem -- who is he? The toughest thing Barack has had to overcome -- and it will continue to be his biggest obstacle -- is that too many of the voters simply don't know him well enough to vote for him. The fact that Obama is new to the scene is both one of his most attractive qualities AND his biggest drawback. Too many Americans, who on the surface seem to like Barack Obama, just don't feel comfortable voting for someone who hasn't been on the national scene very long. It's a comfort level thing, and it may be just what keeps Obama from winning in November ("I'd rather vote for the devil I know than the devil I don't know").

What Obama needs is a vice presidential candidate who is NOT a professional politician, but someone who is well-known and beloved by people across the political spectrum; someone who, like Obama, spoke out against the war; someone who has a good and generous heart, who will be cheered by the rest of the world; someone whom we've known and loved and admired all our lives and who has dedicated her life to public service and to the greater good for all.

That person, Caroline, is you.

I cannot think of a more winning ticket than one that reads: "OBAMA-KENNEDY."

Caroline, I know that nominating yourself is the furthest idea from your mind and not consistent with who you are, but there would be some poetic justice to such an action. Just think, eight years after the last head of a vice presidential search team looked far and wide for a VP -- and then picked himself (a move topped only by his hubris to then lead the country to near ruin while in office) -- along comes Caroline Kennedy to return the favor with far different results, a vice president who helps restore America to its goodness and greatness.

Caroline, you are one of the most beloved and respected women in this country, and you have been so admired throughout your life. You chose a life outside of politics, to work for charities and schools, to write and lecture, to raise a wonderful family. But you did not choose to lead a private life. You have traveled the world and met with its leaders, giving you much experience on the world stage, a stage you have been on since you were a little girl.

The nation has, remarkably (considering our fascination with celebrity), left you alone and let you live your life in peace. (It's like, long ago, we all collectively agreed that, with her father tragically gone, a man who died because he wanted to serve his country, we would look out for her, we would wish for her to be happy and well, and we would have her back. But we would let her be.)

Now, I am breaking this unwritten code and asking you to come forward and help us in our hour of need. So many families are hurting, losing their homes, going bankrupt with health care bills, seeing their public schools in shambles and living with this war without end. This is a historic year for women, from Hillary's candidacy to the numerous women running for the House and Senate. This is the year that a woman should be on the Democratic ticket. This is the year that both names on that ticket should be people OUTSIDE the party machine. This is the year millions of independents and, yes, millions of Republicans are looking for something new and fresh and bold (and you are the Kennedy Republicans would vote for!).

This is the moment, Caroline. Seize it! And Barack, if you're reading this, you probably know that she is far too humble and decent to nominate herself. So step up and surprise us again. Step up and be different than every politician we have witnessed in our lifetime. Keep the passion burning amongst the young people and others who have been energized by your unexpected, unpredicted, against-all-odds candidacy that has ignited and inspired a nation. Do it for all those reasons. Make Caroline Kennedy your VP. "Obama-Kennedy." Wow, does that sound so cool.

Caroline, thanks for letting me intrude on your life. How wonderful it will be to have a vice president who will respect the Constitution, who will support (instead of control) her president, who will never let her staff out a CIA agent, and who will never tell her country that she is "currently residing in an undisclosed location."

Say it one more time: "OBAMA-KENNEDY." A move like that might send a message to the country that the Democrats would actually like to win an election for once.

Yours,
Michael Moore

Had my eyes dilated this afternoon, but I can still see

It seemed absurd to me that Hillary had her main talking point that she is a woman. Dick Cheney is a man and so far we've had 43 presidents, all men. Why would anyone want Cheney for president when he has so much experience in the Oval Office? I trust Hillary further with the red phone than I would Cheney. But I'm glad neither is going to be president or VP.

Vice presidents are helpful in doing a hatchet job during the fall campaign. If we have a woman I can't see Caroline doing that. Sibelius would be smooth because she is accustomed to campaigning. Yet there is no reason to have a woman just to find a dream team.

Through optical fuzz, I think an idea just popped in. Let Barack choose who he wants to. He can worry about gender/race/homestate/political experience and on and on. AND we don't want another imperial president or vice- president, either. It's not the man or woman we elect==it's whether he/she seems to be in control of executing laws, not making them.
