Home loan troubles break records again
A record one in 10 American homeowners with a mortgage were either at least a month behind on their payments or in foreclosure at the end of September as the source of housing market pressure shifted to the crumbling U.S. economy. Employers slashed 533,000 jobs in November, the most in 34 years, catapulting the unemployment rate to 6.7 percent, the Labor Department said Friday.
Some bailout holdings down $9 billion
Stock intended to eventually earn taxpayers a profit as part of the Bush administration's massive bank bailout has lost a third of its value — about $9 billion — in barely one month, according to an Associated Press analysis. Shares in virtually every bank that received federal money have remained below the prices the government negotiated.
Workers Give Up
The number of unemployed workers rose by 251,000 in November. But the number of people who were outside of the labor force — that is, neither working nor looking for work — rose by much more: 637,000. These people aren’t counted as unemployed in the government’s statistics, because they are not looking for work. Many of them, presumably, have stopped looking for work because they didn’t think they could find a good job.
Jobless Rate Soars to 6.7% in November
With the economy deteriorating rapidly, the nation’s employers shed 533,000 jobs in November, the 11th consecutive monthly decline, the government reported Friday morning, and the unemployment rate rose to 6.7 percent. The job losses far exceeded the 350,000 figure that was the consensus expectation of economists.

The Justice Department's new leaders may not gain access to the Bush administration's most sensitive legal opinions until after the January inauguration, Mukasey said. Some materials also are highly classified, which adds a layer of complexity.

Layoffs soar as US plunges deeper into recession
New economic reports show that the severity of the US recession and the speed with which it is developing are greater than anticipated by economists and business forecasters. There is a sharp rise in layoffs in virtually every sector of the economy, continuing distress in credit markets, financial instability and slumping consumer demand. Indices portend a recession more severe than any since the Great 1930s Depression.

Architect Rove returns to repair Bush image
Karl Rove said the September 11 attacks on America had a major impact on how Bush dealt with the then Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. "In the aftermath of 9/11 the concern was about a tyrant accused of enormous human rights abuses," he said, justifying the Bush decision to wage war on Iraq over the then Washington belief that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.

Speaking later in the day, the country's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin also hoped that the Illinois senator's election would lead to 'positive changes'.
Feds ignored clear meltdown warnings (shades of 9/11 and Katrina)
The Bush administration backed off proposed crackdowns on no-money-down, interest-only mortgages years before the economy collapsed, buckling to pressure from some of the same banks that have now failed.
