The Old Codger

John McCain has blundered again.  First, there was -- and is -- Sarah Palin.  Now, there is Joe The Plumber -- known in real life as Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher.  There are a lot of similarities between Sarah and Joe., but one glaring and prominent difference:  Joe has now given more press statements than Sarah has.

There is speculation that Joe may have been in on sending a tape of his conversation with Obama to the “Fair and Balanced” folks over at Fox.  Whether his 15 minutes of fame was something that he planned or not really isn’t the issue.  Suffice to say that there are plenty of holes in his “story”  that could indicate that Joe really doesn’t have a clue about many things in life -- especially about running a business.

One would have thought that the operatives in the McCain campaign would have vetted 34-year old Joe before they held him up as a positive example for an argument.  If they had, they would have discovered that he doesn’t have a plumber's license and that he has a tax lien against him for unpaid Ohio State income taxes.  Those two facts alone would basically prohibit Joe from getting a loan to purchase a business under even the best of circumstances.  A man with a $1,200 tax lien against him certainly doesn’t have cash in savings to buy a business.  Joe is no doubt like most Americans - living from pay check to pay check, with big fantasies.

Sen. McCain’s real problem is that he doesn’t know how to run a campaign.  He hired proteges of Karl Rove who ran two successful campaigns for President Bush.  Perhaps he figured that if these same people could get an idiot elected twice, they could work wonders for him.  Or, perhaps, he believed that Americans would be receptive to the same type of smear campaign that Rove ran for Bush, of which he was a victim.

McCain obviously is letting his campaign control him rather than him controlling his campaign.  He seemingly does what his campaign tells him to do without question and without any input.  This alone is indication that he is not the man to run the country.

McCain never stood a chance.  He made it through the primaries only because those who also were running at the time were simply not electable.  The country is not ready for staunch conservatives.  It has tried that route for the last eight years.  No Republican on earth could ever get elected after the disasters of the Bush Administration.

Sen. McCain tried his best.  He simply has had the wrong people tellng him what to do.  Eventually, McCain, Palin and Joe the (Almost) Plumber will ride off into the sunset.  The biggest fear should be that McCain’s Blunder, Palin, might come back again.

And, my friends -- that would present a bigger crisis than the current economic one.
