MSNBC's False Attacks on Young Voters

by John Wilson     Page 1 of 1 page(s)

Tell A Friend

MSNBC has a story declaring "Young voters not essential to Obama triumph." According to this article by Tom Curry,

AnaMaria Arumi, who directs the exit poll desk for NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo, has done the calculations based on the exit poll data and here is what she found: On a state-by-state level, when she re-ran the numbers as if there were no voters under 30, the only states that would switch to Republican presidential candidate John McCain are Indiana and North Carolina.

The MSNBC blog First Read adds a snarky aside, "(Never mind the cynics among us who may now send all these "young voters did it" press releases into their junk email folder.)"

Perhaps those cynics should hold on to their press releases for a moment. This may have seemed like a powerful story. Unfortunately, it's not quite true. Obama won more than just Indiana and North Carolina due to young voters.

In Florida, Obama won 61-37 over McCain among the 18-29 group, which was 15% of the voters. A 24-point gap times 15% = a 3.6% advantage. Obama won Florida 50.88-48.37, only a margin of 2.51%. Young voters won Florida for Obama.

In Ohio, Obama won 61-36 among the 18-29 group, which was 17% of voters. That's a gap of 4.25%. Obama won Ohio 51.15-47.25, a margin of 3.9%. So Obama would have lost Ohio, too, without young voters. And that one electoral vote in Nebraska, too.

Now it is true that Obama's landslide was so overwhelming that he would have still won the election without these four states (or even Virginia, which he would barely win without young voters). But Obama's margin of victory would be cut in half in Nevada, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Iowa, putting him perilously close to losing if McCain had been able to stage a comeback.

It's also notable that young voters 18-29 voted nationwide in record numbers (18% of voters) and in record proportions (an amazing 66-34 margin) for the Democrats to give Obama an advantage of 7.57 million votes. Without them, Obama's popular vote victory would have been cut to 400,000 votes, or 0.3%, essentially destroying Obama's mandate for change.

Young voters inspired by Obama were absolutely essential in U.S. Senate races in Georgia, Minnesota, Oregon, Alaska, and perhaps also Louisiana, not to mention numerous close races in the House as well as local and state elections.

It's also important to note that young people were a critical force turning the election to Obama. Whether they were schlepping to Florida or coming out in droves to the Iowa caucus, young voters won this election for Obama. They were the core of the volunteers who drove the enthusiasm for the Obama campaign. They were the people convincing their neighbors and relatives to vote for Obama. They were the bulk of the volunteers and low-paid campaign workers who did the essential grunt work of this campaign. They were the ones who utilized the web and social networking and cell phones and on-the-ground canvassing to turn what might have been another election stolen by Republicans into a landslide for Obama.

The cynical journalists can twist the poll numbers and dismiss the Obama Generation all they want, but we know the truth about how Obama transformed the youth numbers in this election to astonishing levels, and in doing so may have helped establish the foundation for a permanent progressive majority.

The best is yet to come

I say this by pointing to my generation and those a little older.  To have grown up during the New Deal altered our way of thinking about government.  When things had boiled down to a sullen standstill during the depression it marked us all.  Those of  us still alive do not all vote in the same way, but most have been engaged.

It is with hope that the youth of today will remain in the political process. Moreover, I hope they will learn that the Boomer generation did not get it right.  Much as they marched, protested, and  burned bras and draft cards--one thing they were weak on.  They failed to recognize that it was not them against the "Establishment," but that the government should have been as important in good times as bad times.  Here we are with a generation ready for "entitlements" and social security and medicare are the problems of the day.

Wishful thinking...

I will value and cherish the so-called Obama Generation if they organize and take action like Nader's Raiders did in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Hope and change...change and hope...hope and change...change and hope...

Kevin

You seem a bright young fellow----just the type that is needed to push, push, the agenda forward but you seem caught up in a belief change has to come from a Nader type and I think this is incorrect. You have seen history just made, and it is my belief that this is just the beginning. You speak of the Obama generation, as if it were akin to Nader, instead of millions of people of all age, color, and nationality. Nader gave us seat belts and that was a great contribution, but Obama may give us a new world. You are very young for so much cynicism----read Margaret Bassett, at 86 she is not only very very wise but also optimistic. Borrow some from her----I am sure she will offer it.

Clarification

I am not suggesting that change has to come from nerdy white lawyers who are in or just emerging from colleges which may or may not be prestigious.

I am suggesting that the type of actions we need to see the Obama Generation take (a diverse conglomeration which I will gladly be a part of) need to be actions like the actions taken by Nader's Raiders.

Action needs to have depth, needs to be well organized, and needs to be backed up with good research so that we can argue for a consensus around the policy changes we wish to see advanced.

My fixation on Nader is only a result of how effective he was in his efforts.

Nader's accomplishments include the clause on plane tickets that say if you're bumped, the airlien will reimburse you and put you up for the night, airbags, no nukes, the Freedom of Information Act, the Clean Air Act, the Consumer Protection Agency, and more.

The vigor and passion of Nader's Raiders, I hope, will manifest itself in whatever the Obama Generation does.

I am not asking the Obama Generation to be Nader's Raiders. I didn't want the peace movement to try and recreate '68 because it was in the past and I don't want the Obama Generation to be Nader's Raiders for the same reason.

For anything meaningful to be done, authenticity must exist in the movement for real change. So, I do not wish for imitation.

I apologize for throwing Nader in many readers' faces. But, I must say the way society treats Nader and his legacy is appalling.

Can you blame me for sensing injustice and wanting to correct it? I mean, I can't think of a better way of correcting it than if a new generation were to remember what he did so effectively and use it to inspire their action.

The young and dumb

Just like we need the young and dumb to fight or wars Obama needed the young and dumb to win his war on America. These are the people that will blindly follow and do what someone older than them orders them to do or mindlessly convinces them to do.

Change!, woo hooo, yes we can! woo hooo, fight the man,  woo hooo

Not one of them has any idea what Obama stands for. I think the funniest example of it was when asked if they support Obama’s ban on stem cell research they agreed. When asked if they supported Obama’s opposition to abortion they agreed. Not one of the student voters understood they were agreeing with Republican views but were voting for Obama any way.

They were only looking for a reason to party. Now comes the hangover.
