Googles new tool, NGram, using the millions of books that google has scanned, allows us to do searches to see the occurrence or use of words over time. You can do a search on a word that didn't exist and see how it exploded in a few years.

I took a look at the words used to describe the Democratic party, looking back from 1800 until the most recent year Google covers-- 2008. Here's the link to the search.

It looks like the Democrats lost their way, brand and perhaps message-wise, around 1999.

NGram is a new, fascinating, addicting tool. Try it out. It is case sensitive, so it's important to check upper and lower case. For example, I found that twitter pulls more than Twitter, but Facebook pulls a lot more than facebook.

So, check out Google's NGram. Once you start using it, it may change the way you write, as it makes you more aware of upper and lower case usage, at the least, and as you see how some words are in much more common usage. Some believe that when you use words that are more frequently used you tap into a kind of universal energy or what Rupert Sheldrake calls Morphogenic Field.

Update:
Carol comments that that's about when the corporate media started attacking liberals. I tried a few ideas and this sure matches pretty well. Also, doing a tighter search, the collapse of the Democratic brand really starts at 2001. That's the exactly when the phrase "conservative talk radio" takes off.

A few declarations.
-While I'm registered as a Democrat, I consider myself to be a dynamic critic of the Democratic party, just as, well, not quite as much, but almost as much as I am a critic of republicans.

-My articles express my personal opinion, not the opinion of this website.
