Preface; I have spent most of the last twenty years living with, learning with and sharing life with the Lakota people of the Pine Ridge Reservation"[insert "concentration camp to sub for "reservation"]  For years I traveled and taught all over the western United States, as a Sundancer and Pipe Carrier experiencing a life so different from that of the dominate culture that my biggest problem is readjusting to contemporary society. Not only is it difficult, I really do not want to adjust to this insanity that calls itself modern culture

Heyokha"from the Lakota.   Heyokha is a word associated with the Thunder Dreamers sometimes called backwards or Contraries,   these people are considered sacred and clowns in that they do things backwards which is often fun and entertaining yet hold a much deeper meaning in spiritual ways as well.   In this piece I am using the word in it's Clown like definition.   To my Heyokha friends I am using this ONLY in that way, to hold up before the people that which shows them the foolishness of their ways.

It's a Heyokha World out there

Let me start here with a quote I forwarded to my personal blog and commented on.  I quote".."

"Just look at us. Everything is backwards; everything is upside down. Doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the major media destroy information and religions destroy spirituality" - Michael Ellner

Anyone who has read what I post on my blog, knows the story I tell about a young student that needed an idea from me about how to deal with all I had been teaching him,  while I left on a trip [To the rest of you, just follow a second and the story will be clear]".and how I was shown to tell him that while I was away he could best study for himself by looking at the world of contemporary society as backwards or, using a word he understood well"a Heyokha world"and to explore the idea of reversing all they told him and looking at it from the opposite perspective"..little did I know way back then, in '95 just how true the words I was given by spirit were to prove to be.

One need only look at the evolution of things like "Free Speech Zones"".paramilitary armed police beating pregnant women in Seattle".or shooting a Marine observer at a demonstration in California at point blank range with a tear gas grenade" the brutal assault on Women's Rights by nearly half our population that backed recent candidates in our "so called"  "Land of the Free" to see a positively Orwellian trend in our government's actions.  Throw in the horrific shootings in movie theaters and primary schools and things seem totally out of control

Heyokha?....absolutely!"while lauding our "rights" and how "free we are"the same governing body is actually TAKING them away".and all in the name of protecting freedom".how Heyokha is that?!!!!.  Hmmm let's see"didn't Orwell's vision speak of a culture that produced ideals like "Ignorance is Strength?"""[the republicans sure support that one]   "Freedom is Slavery" and War is Peace?, just flip that last one and you have the greatest, and most used excuse for starting a war anyone can imagine"..life as an oxymoron!

We "take" from the Earth and give nothing back".leaving the very "rock" we rely on for EVERYTHING depleted. Polluted and barren.  Build homes on flood plains, our biggest cities at sea level"Seine net the oceans without regard to the many species we do not WANT to catch".just leaving them to die in the nets or be discarded

After living as I did for so many years in a culture that believes "No man has a right to tell another how to pray or who to pray to" as a basic tenant , or me a really stunning factor is how much contemporary religions play in this rush to insanity.   Take the Middle East for example".Muslims fighting Muslims".Christians fighting Muslims"and even Burma adds a twist, Muslims fighting Buddhists! And of course never forget divided India"Muslims fighting Hindus".do I see a trend here? Of course I DO".but".do you?  How in the hell did things get this screwed up???

I saw a quote recently on a page that expresses its purpose as promoting religions tolerance that gave me pause

www.religioustolerance.org

"Religious intolerance scarcely existed before the rise of monotheism. 1 Ancient polytheistic religions worshipped numerous gods but never involved doctrinally precise professions of faith. There was no such matters as orthodoxy or heresy. 2 The gods were mutually tolerant of one another, and the worshippers were eclectic, moving from one shrine or cult to the next without the slightest feeling of inconsistency. In Tarsus, where St. Paul grew up, as in all the towns of the ancient world outside of Judea, the gods were not jealous. They insisted that they must be offered punctiliously all honors due to them, but they did not worry about what honors were paid to other gods or men. 3 Much later, Attila the Hun allowed members of his horde to follow whichever gods they wished, so long as they didn't interfere in each other's freedom of worship.

Attila as model for religious tolerance?
