Others are calling it unlikely. Since Palin is clearly unqualified to even be vice president, they say, she's clearly unqualified to be president, even with another four years under her stylish belt.
But stranger things have happened -- like the election of the similarly unqualified George W. Bush in 2000.
And that's not where the similarities end.
Like Bush, Palin appeals to middle America with her "down-home" style, be it real or pretentious. Like Bush, she is not a reader. Like Bush, she lacks intellectual curiosity. And somehow it works for her, as it did for Bush. It's a mating call to those who would choose a president based on who they can personally relate to, and who they'd want to have a beer with. Personally, when I think of my own beer buddies, I do not want to view them as possible U.S. presidents. I want to elect someone smarter than I. But, to the Bush/Palin supporters, the articulate, the educated, and the world-wise are viewed upon with suspicion. Elitist, they are called with disdain.
And look at where we've gotten after eight years with a beer buddy in the White House. If you think you want more of that, perhaps you should lay off the beer.
Another similarity between Bush and Palin is even more worrisome -- their ties to the religious right.
Choosing Sarah Palin helped drum up their support for the McCain ticket, since some evangelical leaders had previously opposed a McCain candidacy.
Like Bush, and to the delight of the religious extremists, Palin is anti-choice and anti-science, and supports abstinence-only sex education, which has proven to be a dismal failure. In many ways, they seem like America's answer to the Taliban -- trying to legislate "morality" and stifle all social progress. The last thing we need is a Supreme Court with new justices appointed by a president with this repressive and backward mindset.
Perhaps most frightening is their sense of God-given entitlement. George W. Bush believes that God chose him to lead this nation. Similarly, Sarah Palin seems to believe that God wanted her to be governor of Alaska.
If an ordinary person were to make such claims, they'd be held for psychological examination. But Bush used his perceived hotline to heaven as an excuse to wage war on an unarmed nation. (God wanted him to invade Iraq too, you see.)
And there's no telling what God might instruct a President Palin to do.
I'd prefer that we not find out.
There is good reason why our founding fathers wrote the establishment clause into the First Amendment.
Accordingly, as Thomas Jefferson once said, "No power to proscribe any religious exercise or to assume authority in religious discipline has been delegated to the Federal Government."
Today, Jefferson is surely spinning in his grave.

As Sarah Palin and John McCain balefully eye each other,...
each believing that the other is responsible for torpedoing their electoral chances, I have become quite certain that Palin is eyeing 2012 for herself. The only thing that I can see preventing her effort is action by the Alaskan legislature to censure or impeach her on abuse of power charges. The repudiation of her ticket by the electorate will, by itself, have no effect on her plans to have it all by John Sanchez Jr. (9 articles, 0 quicklinks, 25 diaries, 1791 comments [148 recommended, 3 rejected]) on Sunday, Oct 26, 2008 at 9:58:39 AM

Reply: why would she get abuse of power indictment and not bush etc
Before Palin I had not heard of anyone being called on abuse of power. Biden mentioned the phrase during the dem debates and the moderators either didn't understand what he meant or didn't want to go there, (why, I don't know) and finally a couple debates later, I think Richardson added the wording to his repertoire, but honestly they all seemed brain dead about the term. Is it a real legal standing for prosecution, and if so, why not the crooks in the casablanca? Thanks for your thoughts on this. by karmacounselor (1 articles, 0 quicklinks, 7 diaries, 106 comments [7 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Oct 26, 2008 at 1:26:57 PM

Reply: Sarah Palin's abuse of power has to do with her violation...
of an Alaskan ethics law. The law states that no public official may pursue a personal interest through official action, which Gov. Palin did in pressuring Walt Monegan to fire her state trooper ex-brother-in-law and in failing to stop her husband, Todd from doing the same in the name of her office. There is no such specific ethics law dealing with the President at the federal level, although specific charges for impeachment have been preferred by Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, and co-sponsored by Rep. Wexler of Florida, among others. The impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney languishes in committee as a result of procedural maneuvers. This abomination may be laid at the feet of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who is primarily responsible for blocking the effort. by John Sanchez Jr. (9 articles, 0 quicklinks, 25 diaries, 1791 comments [148 recommended, 3 rejected]) on Sunday, Oct 26, 2008 at 4:23:03 PM

Palin and Bush
Bush claims to be part of the religious right so he can obtain their votes. I believe Bush has no convictions only a burning obsession to cater to corporate demands. I feel Palin is exactly the same no real moral convictions only a sense of duty to the corporations who will help her attain the powers of dictator. Over educated elitists care more about common folks than these two. As far as having a beer with Bush or Palin i don't think either one should risk losing any more brain cells. by Gary Denson (2 articles, 0 quicklinks, 1 diaries, 283 comments) on Sunday, Oct 26, 2008 at 2:25:23 PM

Palin the new Bush?
Good point with this article. Those who think the electorate would be insulted to see the Mepublicans field such an unqualified candidate, just think who is in office now: an alcoholic, barely C student who was addicted to cocaine and went AWOL from the Texas National Guard and who ruined every business his daddy's rich friends ever set him up with. At least Palin comes with a anti witch guarantee. by Bryan Emmel (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 415 comments [32 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Oct 26, 2008 at 3:43:48 PM

Palin is the sex hormone
Good article Mary. Palin is the hormone of last resort for republican party. They mastered the art of intoxicating a good segment of American population through religious and jingoistic hormones. Now, in difficlut times, in addition to those two hormones, they added the thir one: sex hormones. It is that simple. Of course she will run in 2012
She is already posturing for the run by claiming that the McCain Campaign has held her back and kept her from reaching her full potential. She has tasted the national political limelight and discovered that she is a star, though at the same time refusing to acknowlege that her brilliance is lacking. Sarah is, first and foremost, a control freak. She does not like the word "no" unless it is uttered from her own mouth. She is narcissistic to the highest degree possible, whilst still being functional. In short, she doesn't believe, think or even acknowlege that her crap stinks. Ho hum, they're all dumb...
Hey folks! Since 1980 and the election of Reagan "raygun" the repubs have learned that it's far to their advantage to have a dumb leader who can read teleprompters, than a real one who can speak from their head. That's why since Nixon, who was a bright guy, although "not a crook", we've had a continual decline in repug IQ capabilities to run the chief office. Ford, Bush 1, Bush 2... geez we've gone from 110 to 92 in intelligence for the elephant party select group of leaders. Palin is no exception. In the dumb down book of idiots, she rates a ten. Then again, money makes people smart, don't it? by Cinderfella (1 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 248 comments [95 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Monday, Oct 27, 2008 at 4:52:13 AM
