This is an important must-read article by Mike Whitney of Counterpunch. Hugo Chavez has vastly improved the lives of Venezuela's people, the greatest proportion of them being poor and middle-class. He has subsidized fuel prices, built infrastructure and established a safety net of free healthcare and social services. Poverty levels have dropped by 50%.  The United States should be looking to Venezuela as a model for solving our overwhelming problems. Instead, the US has behaved like a power-mad, militarist aggressor in over a decade of  relentless attempts to overthow and even assassinate him. It seems that the United States will not allow any nation with oil resources to exist outside of its control  - or any social model to exist that is not heartless, gutless and intent on the enslavement of all but the moneyed few. In a recent press conference, Chavez remarked that the United States (and presumably poison in the form of live cancer cells) were behind the wave of cancer that has hit 6 current and former presidents of Latin countries - Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina and Peru. All of those recently diagnosed with cancer were and are populist leaders. LY
