Official flag of Iran
According to the New York Times this morning in an article by David E. Sanger entitled, "Iran Offers Plan, Dismissed by U.S.", the Iranians, do to "harsh economic sanctions" have proposed a "nine step plan" to end the crisis over its nuclear development.
The Iranian plan requires "many concessions" starting with the immediate cessation of all sanctions. The U.S. in the past has called this a non-starter and although the Obama administration hasn't responded directly to this latest Iranian offer, it's a safe bet it will be rejected.
It's all a "cat and mouse" game regarding Iran, its nuclear program and the U.S. inspired economic sanctions that can be best summed up by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's comments on Wednesday where she made it clear "the U.S. has no intentions of relaxing the sanctions". Well so much for this latest offer by Iran.
Then again, with the presidential election just one month away, the Obama administration is not about to alter the current stalemated "negotiations" with Iran in any way. And with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu all but conceding Israel isn't about to attack Iran without full U.S. agreement, an October surprise involving Iran is pretty much off the front burner for the time being.
But come November 7, with Obama still in command or a Mitt Romney victory having him waiting in the wings till January 20, it's almost assured the Iranian nuclear crisis will again become front and center.
This writer, and many others have written extensively about this U.S./Israeli inspired crisis over Iran's nuclear development and the disastrous consequences that would ensue with a U.S./ Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. [1] So there's no need to further elaborate on those consequences.
But the American people have been fed massive amounts of propaganda regarding Iran coming from high level U.S. government officials who use a compliant MSM which dutifully publishes their claims without questioning the accuracy or validity of the accusations. The same can be said about the talking head blowhards and ex-generals (some of the latter representing defense contractors [without the viewer knowing] that always benefit from war or the threat of one).
Iran has been portrayed as an existential threat, a supporter of terrorists and a bogeyman evil that must be confronted by the U.S. and its surrogate Israel. Yet it is they who have fomented this phony crisis with Iran while the MSM keeps it roiling.
Let's remember too, since the U.S. embassy takeover and hostage taking in Tehran in 1979, the U.S. begrudges Iran falling out of its orbit of hegemony and uses any pretext to squeeze it economically and intimidating it militarily.
It is the U.S. that refuses to engage Iran diplomatically without pre-conditions. It is the U.S. that has been disingenuous in not wanting a normalization of relations.
Add in the military/industrial/political complex fostering U.S. militarism and endless war that benefits the corporatist state, Iran just becomes another useful contrived "enemy" we need to justify our bloated and unnecessary defense spending. Throw in the hard right American Jewish lobby along with their fundamentalist Christian brethren that offer support for all Israeli aggressive policies and all the ingredients are in place for another unnecessary war sometime down the road.
Think of it as the U.S. way in the world.
