In today's New York Times, there is an article entitled, States' Actions to Block Voters Appear Illegal.  As the title suggests, several important states have been doing illegal purges of their voting rolls in preparation for the election next month.  What is noticeably missing from the article is any mention of possible remedies.  It's just illegal, but apparently nothing can be or at least will be done about it.  It could change who will be our next president, but so what?  On to the next news report.

The Bush years have accustomed us all to this kind of shoulder-shrugging with respect to illegality.  It is so common, nothing can be done.  Bush issues a signing statement rejecting a law written by congress and passed over his own signature.  Oh well, that's just the way it is.

Are we a nation of laws?  It used to be said that we were, but it really is not so clear any more.
