Seldom, if ever, have I seen a director's first film that touched such a deep and mature chord of love without any empty and unnecessary indulgences ~ and that film is Philippe Claudel's I've Loved You So Long: Allen L Roland

Kristin Scott Thomas brilliantly plays Juliette ~ a woman released from prison after 15 years, for killing her young gravely ill son, and returning to live with her sister Lea and brother-in-law who take her in somewhat reluctantly.

But it is Elsa Zylberstein, Juliette's sister Lea, who all but steals this movie with her breathtaking performance as the younger sister who once worshipped her older sister and never stopped loving her.

The film gently unfolded and intoxicated me with its unhurried pace and hints of buried secrets.

As Claudel explains his story ~ " I've Loved You So long is a film about the strength of women, their capacity to shine forth, reconstruct themselves and be reborn. A story about our secrets, about confinement, about the isolation we all share .."

But what Claudel does not mention and was so apparent to myself ~ was the power of their unconditional love which transcended emotional love and perfected both of them as they slowly surrendered to it.

This is a love that also transcends time and space and joins us to what is deepest within ourselves. I have felt this same love with my brother, my sister and my beloved partner.

The outcome of this deeply moving conscious unconditional love is that it always leads to the perfection of both persons when it is reciprocated ~ as it most certainly does with Lea and Juliette in this amazing and most appropriate film for a troubled world in search for deeper meaning.
