We loved the blind girl
til she made us see
our inhumanity:
that the power to rise
we always deny to some;
that poverty and need are the
result of selfishness and greed.

And so, after all these years,
the less than perfect
are still being cast aside
while her statue is unveiled
to pompous platitudes
and tumultuous applause.
