Heeling the World, Healing Ourselves

The heel of the boot
hit the side of Africa
sharply
beginning in October 1935
when the well-heeled of Italy
Mussolini & his bloody fascists
rich robber barons
as usual
with their hired hands & fanatical followers
as usual
viciously stomped on Africa
a giant stiletto boot
mercilessly piercing inside Ethiopia
again
exploiting the poor & weak below
crushing & colonizing
another precious piece of amazing Africa
as usual
in their deadly dance
of golden greed
of cruelty, terror, & war
of ugly empire
as usual
the heel of the boot
hit the side of Africa
sharply
and my grandfather
always taught me
to root for the underdog
