I like John McCain. I honestly do. He seems like a nice guy, and I respect the service and sacrifice he has paid his country. Sure, it was a bit inappropriate when he sang "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran"- to the tune of the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann," but it was also kinda funny, and in my book, a bit inappropriate always takes a back seat to funny. Even though I like him as a person, though, I won't be voting for him. There are three major issues that I disagree with McCain about, and each one is pretty much a deal-breaker for me. The three of them together are damning.
1) John McCain is against abortion except in the cases of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother
As a card-carrying militant feminist bee-otch, it really galls me when guys try to legislate abortion. You will never be pregnant, ergo; you have no say in this issue. I, in turn, will never make any sort of judgment for or against anyone who has chosen to dodge the draft. Deal?
2) He's perfectly happy to continue the war in Iraq, with no timeline for the U.S. to leave
McCain was quoted as saying it would be fine with him if the U.S. stayed in Iraq for 100 years, if that's what it took. To be fair, he clarified this position by saying that what he means is that it would be okay with him if the U.S. were to achieve peace in Iraq and then maintain a military presence similar to the military bases the U.S. maintains in Japan, Germany and South Korea.
But that's not okay with me. Can someone give me a good reason why the U.S. continues to maintain a military presence in Germany and Japan? Are we supposed to post people all over the world so that we can keep a patronizing, god-like eye on the whole planet?
It's obviously in our interest to have a military presence in South Korea right now so that we can keep tabs on Kim Jong Illin'. But since Iraq isn't a likely aggressor against the U.S., why stay there for decades? McCain says it's so we can keep an eye on al Quaeda. Newsflash, dude: al Quaeda is also recruiting and training in--get ready for it--Afghanistan, Algeria, Bosnia, Chechnya, Eritrea, Kosovo, the Philippines, Somalia, Tajikistan, Yemen, the U.S., Germany, Pakistan and Kosovo. There are likely other countries as well, we just don't know for sure. We also don't know where al Quaeda's headquarters is at the moment. Would it be a good idea for the U.S. to have spies in all those countries? Sure! But a military presence? Uh, no.
3) He's just itching to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge preserve
Look, even as a hippie tree-hugging dirt-worshiper, even I will admit that there's the possibility that drilling in the ANWR might not disturb as much as a single Porcupine Caribou. But it's a WILDLIFE REFUGE. It was set aside specifically for the purpose of not being touched. Can't we leave ANY spot of land just be on this planet?
Besides, oil is past its expiration date in this messed-up rat-race for fuel. It's time to start concentrating on sustainable forms of energy.
Then there's Barack Obama. There are several reasons I will be voting for him, reasons both important and less so, reasons that go beyond the fact that he's incredibly intelligent, articulate, willing to sit down with any world leader to discuss any issue and has a drive to get the national debt back under control. Those reasons include:
He'd be the first non-white guy in the White House. (If he's elected, can we call it the Brown House?)
Conservatives will tell you that this is a piss-poor, superficial reason to vote for a political candidate. Superficial? Since when has race ever been superficial in this country? For many people it's a life or death issue.

A mean old man
McCain, a nice guy? You must be kidding, right? A man who calls his wife ''c...t'' in public is a nice guy? A man who was known in his youth for telling racist and homophobic jokes and used terms like niggers, gooks, etc. is a nice guy? A man who tells gorilla rape jokes is a nice guy? A man who blows up his fuse at the drop of a hat and has called Senator Chuck Grassley ''a f... jerk'', told ''f....you'' to Senator John Cornyn, and declared to Senator Pete Dominici ''only an a..... would put together a budget like this'' is a nice guy?'' And that's just a few examples of ''Senator hothead's'' nasty temper, I could go on. Please read this http://www.capitolhillblue.com/cont/node/10086 and discover the real McCain. by francine (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 385 comments) on Sunday, Aug 3, 2008 at 10:03:58 AM

Reply: A mean old mann
I hadn't heard that he's called his wife a c*nt in public. That's definitely not nice. As far as cursing at other politicians, well, that's probably how they behave sometimes. The public isn't privvy to every conversation between politicians. If Obama was to tell Dick Cheny to f*ck off I'd probably pee my pants laughing. by Amber Fraley (2 articles, 0 quicklinks, 2 diaries, 4 comments) on Sunday, Aug 3, 2008 at 11:50:02 AM

Thanks for your answer; I am not spreading unfounded rumors here: everything I am reporting about McCain, all of my quotes relate to incidents that happened in public--even during debates held in Congress-- and can therefore be confirmed by several witnesses. McCain is psychologically very much a carbon copy of Bush--same privileged origins, meaning they could both f... up and behave awfully and never have to face the consequences, same petulant fratboy attitude, same lack of empathy and sadistic disposition. One thing makes me fear McCain even more than Bush--his hair trigger temper, probably made worse by the PTSD he suffers from following his captivity in Vietnam; that so many Americans are willing to entrust the little red button to a man who has shown repeatedly that he blows up his fuse at the drop of a hat and get spitting mad at anybody who frustrates him ever so slightly is mind boggling. If McCain gets elected, we can be sure he will bomb Iran; if this happens, the consequences would be catastrophic for the US and the rest of the world--just think of the impact it would have on the present oil crisis. I hope that, like you, American voters will realize what's at stake in this election and cast their vote for the mentally stable one. by francine (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 385 comments) on Sunday, Aug 3, 2008 at 12:55:35 PM

You say....
You say: "As a card-carrying militant feminist bee-otch, it really galls me when guys try to legislate abortion. You will never be pregnant, ergo; you have no say in this issue. I, in turn, will never make any sort of judgment for or against anyone who has chosen to dodge the draft. Deal?" Well, I'm a chick, so I can't say no to your offer of a deal, but I can tell you that I think the so-called "right" to abortion is totally anti-male and offends me as a woman who thinks that parents have equal rights and equal responsibilities. If I'm so horny one night that I can't help but open my legs for a penis to give me an orgasm, and let myself get knocked up, and the dude WANTS the kid, why should I be the only one with the say on whether or not the kid is sucked into a sink? Not fair to the dude who might WANT to be a father even if I don't want to be a mother. Speaking of womens' rights, then can I assume you'd support our right to self-defense? Whether we learn to use mace, kick-boxing, knives, or a gun? Personally, I choose a gun -- I don't want to get into hand-to-hand combat with a dude, so a handgun is more efficient for self-defense in my experience and training. But you choose what you want, and I choose what I want. Deal? :-) But I do have to say it's really sad that you'd vote for a guy just because he'll kiss you on the cheek as you pluck your kid piece by bloody piece from your uterus and suck 'em into a sink. If that's your idea of freedom, you are one messed up broad. Now, if he was consistent, and let me decided whether or not I want to be a mother whether or not the kid has passed through my vagina, I might concur with you. But if some dude will let me kill my kid before the kid comes out my vagina, but charge me with murder if I drown the kid a week after he's come through my vagina, I see a HUGE inconsistency. Ask Peter Singer, he'll even agree with me. by shielah jones (1 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 94 comments [8 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Aug 3, 2008 at 6:35:04 PM

Reply: and You say.....
Sure, I'll support your right to defend yourself however you choose. Go for it. If I ever thought I needed a gun, I'd buy one myself. Wow. I assume you're speaking of so-called partial birth abortions. I am sooooooooo not going to get into a tit-for-tat with anybody about abortion. Would I ever have a third-trimester abortion? No. You don't have to either. by Amber Fraley (2 articles, 0 quicklinks, 2 diaries, 4 comments) on Sunday, Aug 3, 2008 at 6:58:26 PM

What should & shouldn't be federal issues
The Preamble to the Constitution states the duties of the federal government are to "provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity ......" Nowhere in there does it mention anything about birth control, abortion or many of the other issues that have been wedged into the past few political circus' masquerading as campaigns that should not be a federal issues. That damned faith based initiative galls the hell out of me. by Dave Kisor (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 1 diaries, 311 comments [40 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Aug 3, 2008 at 10:02:33 PM

John vs the big O
Let me see, Obama sees himself as the self anoint leader of the free world already and he is not even pass the elections yet. Did you read his lips in Berlin when he made his speech. "i can change this world, give me a chance." He wasn't talking to the people, he was just putting on a show. That was the impression that I got from the televised speech. by Andrew Abraham (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 6 comments) on Monday, Aug 4, 2008 at 4:15:44 AM
