Since FDR's selection of Harry S. Truman as Vice-president in 1944. exactly 45.4%, or a little under half, of a president's choice of his deputy has gone on to become president. I arrive at that number by counting the total number of presidents elected in their own right from Franklin D. Roosevelt to present (11), counting the number of vice-presidents serving under those eleven men who went on to become president (5), and dividing the vice-presidents-turned-presidents by the total presidential administrations counted (11). Further, almost thirty percent (27.2%) of those vice-presidents who became president themselves did so by law (when the president died in office or was assassinated or resigned): FDR/Truman, Kennedy/Johnson, Nixon/Ford. It is also worthwhile to point out that both Ford and Reagan were targets of assassination threats where actual bullets were fired: although Ford escaped unharmed, Reagan was wounded. Considering that record combined with the fact that John McCain at 72 years shall be the oldest elected president by four years (in other words, an entire presidential term), it seems his choice of a novice, Palin, is reckless and irresponsible: exactly the type of choice America cannot afford given the current domestic and international crises facing the United States. Moreover, Palin is under investigation by Alaska state authorities for allegedly seeking to fire a former brother-in-law from the state police (ala US attorney firings at the US Justice Department under the current Bush Administration) and is considered a hardline ideologue with little appetite for compromise.
The vice-president's duties under the United States Constitution are to succeed the president upon incapacity and to preside over the US Senate. Palin is not qualified to be president and is too ideological to preside over the US Senate: the world's greatest deliberative body.
All said, an irresponsible choice by McCain.

oops....my friends, I made a mistake...
Strange that John McCain should be playing "identity politics" with his choice for VP. Of course, pandering for votes and political points is more valuable to McCain than any principled choices. by Constance Lavender (90 articles, 0 quicklinks, 86 diaries, 217 comments) on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 7:38:00 AM

Huh?
Just a wild guess .... you think that Cheney turned out to be one of the worst vice-presidents in history, and most certainly is not qualified to be president, in spite of his long resume'. He pushed for an illegal war by distorting or making up facts, among countless other shortcomings. It was extremely "poor judgement" to pick him as vice president. If this is correct in your mind, how can you use him to draw a contrast with Palin, the implication being that Cheney was qualified and she's not? It doesn't make any sense to me. And I think the distinction is that she is the first GOP women on their ticket. And Geraldine Ferraro is not exactly panning Palin. by Alan Williams (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 858 comments) on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 2:26:05 PM

on Geraldine Ferraro...
I worked on the Mondale/Ferraro campaign as a college student in south central Pennsylvania in the fall of 1984. I respect Congresswoman Ferraro a great deal, but I can imagine just one scenario where Gerry Ferraro would actually support McCain/Palin: and it certainly wouldn't be for Palin's experience or her positions or her ideology. by Constance Lavender (90 articles, 0 quicklinks, 86 diaries, 217 comments) on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 6:54:02 PM

...pales in comparison...
Palin supported Alaska's new state sales tax while running for city council in 1992. She has a history of firing public employees for political reasons. As governor, she has supported such "Marxist" initiatives including: (1.) objecting to the closing of a state-owned dairy creamery that was losing money, and (2.) issuing individual $100 debit cards to Alaskans for heating. Among her intitiatives for cutting "wasteful spending" was a veto to cut the Alaska state construction budget (i.e. building infrastructure) which resulted in lost jobs for residents of Alaska (no wonder she was issuing those $100 debit cards). by Constance Lavender (90 articles, 0 quicklinks, 86 diaries, 217 comments) on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008 at 7:51:18 PM

So issuing gas cards is bad, but providing government jobs isn't? Where does the money come from to pay those salaries? Both are bad, but I think giving $100 cards away is better than giving away $100,000 do-nothing jobs at taxpayer expense. by UncleSim (1 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 512 comments [74 recommended, 3 rejected]) on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 5:33:03 PM

My personal support or lack of support for any of her specific "socialist" proposals is besides the point; the issue I raise is her lack of consistency and hypocrisy. by Constance Lavender (90 articles, 0 quicklinks, 86 diaries, 217 comments) on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 6:58:18 PM

Secondly she fired one of her department heads that serve at her pleasure, who may or may not have moved to dismiss an Alaska state trooper that had tasered a minor off duty and had made threats towards his estranged wife and family who happen to include Sara and her family. Well, as Republicans keep on reminding us, we'll have to wait until the investigation is completed until we reach any conclusions regarding the facts in the matter. Since the ethics investigation of the governor is not yet completed, I don't know how anyone can report on the "facts" at issue. Correct? She is currently under investigation in the state of Alaska, no? by Constance Lavender (90 articles, 0 quicklinks, 86 diaries, 217 comments) on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 7:04:48 PM

All fluff
What does it say when a former beauty queen with little experience to fill the role is selected as a vice presidential nominee? All surface fluff; no substance. All praise to the federal government
...US Senate: the world's greatest deliberative body. Yes, by all means, bow down and worship the DC machine. How can we trust someone like Palin, who was less than a decade ago just a common citizen, to look out for the most deceptive, thieving government on the planet? She'll probably look out for the citizens, instead of the 'great' machine the thieves have built in DC. b*tch. by UncleSim (1 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 512 comments [74 recommended, 3 rejected]) on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 5:25:44 PM

Democrats know how to pick VP's ?
Biden has twice run for the Democratic nomination for President, first in 1988, and again in 2008. Both times he was unsuccessful. He also considered joining the Democratic field of candidates for the 2004 presidential race but decided otherwise, saying he did not have enough time to cultivate a sufficient fundraising base. Biden had urged Republican Senator John McCain to run with Kerry, saying the cross-party ticket would help heal the “vicious rift” in U.S. politics.[30] Biden had also been widely discussed as a possible Secretary of State in a Democratic administration.[31] So Obama has picked a winner? I just want to know where Obama is getting all this money to give all Americans the same Insurance as Congress has. Who is paying for this? It's a failed system in Canada, and we relly think it will work here? I hope Obama wins, so in for years we can see Hillary again promsie change, as Obama becomes another Jimmy Carter. I just hope he doesn't farm out the Lincoln Bedroom for extra cash. and please some one tell him Iran Iran is not a small country and he really needs to take Russian more serious. by don bybee (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 206 comments) on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 at 9:01:19 PM

Too ideological???
ROFLMAO You gotta be kiddin' me. Too ideological to preside over the Senate? You can argue over her experience all you like, although to be honest I really don't see much difference between her and Obama. But too ideological? You gotta do better than that. lol by Joe Reeser (1 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 62 comments [1 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Monday, Sep 1, 2008 at 7:04:02 AM

Rovian Choice
I would not be surprised, given the political leanings of Daily Kos, that the Repugs themselves leaked the rumor first that the Downs-syndrome baby was Palin's daughters', so that they now can bluster about how the Dems are being so mean and intolerant to her and her poor daughter, etc etc, when the brave woman was just protecting her daughter, and how heroic to NOT end the preganancy... yadadyadayada........ by Bia Winter (6 articles, 2 quicklinks, 14 diaries, 756 comments [119 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Tuesday, Sep 2, 2008 at 8:24:04 AM
