Over 1300 additional professionals signed onto the Fluoride Action Network's (FAN) statement calling for an end to fluoridation as more evidence emerges to condemn fluoridation.

Now over 1,860 professionals urge Congress to stop water fluoridation and hold Congressional hearings, citing scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks. See statement: http://www.fluorideaction.org/statement.august.2007.html

Since the first FAN August 2007 statement, the following has occurred:

--  The  Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Canada's leading voice on environmental health issues, released a statement opposing fluoridation.

--  The National Kidney Foundation dropped its fluoridation support replacing it with this caution: "Individuals with CKD  [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure."- (1)

-- Researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007  British Medical Journal  indicate that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical. (2)

--  A qualitative review of studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ,  conclude Tang el al., in "Fluoride and Children's Intelligence: A Meta-analysis"- in Biological Trace Element Research  (e-published  8/10/08)

-- Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, "Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland"

-- Dr. A. K. Susheela, a leading fluoride expert, explains in a video why US physicians overlook fluoride as a possible cause of diseases commonly caused by fluoride. http://tinyurl.com/Susheela

-- An expert panel   Health Canada commissioned to study the risks of fluoride exposure says the government should cut the recommended amount in drinking water, encourage the use of low-fluoride toothpaste by children and have makers of infant formula reduce levels in their products. The panel recommended reduced fluoride exposure because it was worried children might be getting too much of the chemical.

Signers to the FAN statement include:

--  Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine

--   Vyvyan Howard, MD, PhD, President, International Society of Doctors for the Environment

--  Ken Cook and Richard Wiles, Environmental Working  Group

--  Lois Gibbs, Center for Health, Environment, and Justice

--  Joseph Mercola, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, who runs the #1 most visited natural health website

childhood cancer

as the parent of a child who died from osteosarcoma, I was horrified to discover the truth about water fluoridation, when I did research to try to save my daughter's life. As I make more parents aware of the risk, they are becoming more aware of this devastating problem. My daughter was part of a cancer cluster in Allegheny County in Pittsburgh PA that occurred in 2001. There is another cluster in Scranton, PA going on right now. The corporate lobby that still promotes this practice has a lock on politicians to continue this deadly practice.

Jon Roth (the George Bush of Fluoridation) in Calabasas CA

September 18, 2008 follow up letter from Robert Singer to the Las Virgenes Water District after Jon Roth is sent to stop a district from sending a letter from the ratepayers who object to having a toxic waste product added to their water.

Board Member Mr. Joseph Bowman:

Our local newspaper, The Acorn, is doing a follow up story on the September 9 board meeting that was visited by a small army of professional Fluoride experts in suits.  Usually the army is reserved for boards actually voting on Fluoridation, so I was flattered when the army was deployed to stop a district from sending a letter from the ratepayers who object to having a toxic waste product added to their water.
Since the meetings are not audio recorded I made notes regarding Jon Roth’s response to my testimony.  In his testimony he said that he respectfully disagreed with my comments- comments that came from the attached memo I submitted to the board for that meeting regarding:     Request Metropolitan Water District (MWD) to discontinue sending water that contains hydrofluosilicic acid.

And then Mr. Roth turned to you and claimed ADA’s Fluoride Facts was the proper response to my memo and testimony. At that point in the meeting you requested any rebuttal to Mr. Roth’s statements be in writing because you would not allow any follow up testimony.

Therefore, I have attached the document Fluoride Debate- a response to the American Dental Associations Booklet Fluoride Facts.  The Fluoride Debate was first published in February 2001, the document and other information about the ADA’s Fluoride Facts can be found at the fluoridedebate website.
The Fluoride Debate takes Fluoridation Facts and has juxtaposed the arguments presented by the American Dental Association (ADA) with comments from many of the independent scientists who have examined the issue with an open mind. The benefits of Fluoridation have been wildly exaggerated and the risks have been downplayed. Behind the scenes many dentists acknowledge this situation but the ADA maintains such a stranglehold on the profession that it is dangerous for them to become openly critical of the practice of fluoridation. Even though the ADA is an association, not a governmental agency, it has a great deal of influence on dental matters through its lobbyists in Washington, D.C., and the almost universal and dominant presence of its members on State Dental Boards. These Boards have the power to remove a license from a practicing dentist in the state, and thus can keep dentists "in line" on controversial issues like fluoridation.
The Response to the ADA's questions has been drawn from a mixture of published scientific data as well as scientific opinion. Among other things the Fluoride Debate booklet contains evidence that:
Fluoride is more toxic than lead and like lead in minute doses, accumulates
and can be damaging to brain/mind development of children, producing abnormal behavior in animals and reducing IQ in humans, especially in conjunction with deficiencies of key nutrients such as calcium, iodine and vitamins. It can also contribute to many disease processes. Because it is almost as toxic as arsenic, fluoride's ability to play havoc in the human body should surprise no one.

There is as much, or more, dental decay in fluoridated communities as there is in the non- fluoridated areas, however, the dental costs are higher in fluoridated communities due to dental fluorosis. Drinking fluoridated water may delay decay, but it does not prevent it.

I hope this will be the last time I have to provide documentation that adding a toxic waste substance does not reduce cavities and the district and therefore the MWD is in violation of California law (AB733) by accepting water that contains hydrofluosilicic acid from a supplier (Solvay Fluorides, LLC) that will not state their product is safe or reduces tooth decay. And consider the following Dental Association’s statements on the benefits of  Fluoridation:
•    “Fluoride primarily protects the smooth surfaces of teeth, and sealant protect the pits and fissures (grooves), primarily on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Although pit and fissure tooth surfaces only comprise about 15% of all permanent tooth surfaces, they were the site of 83% of tooth decay in U.S. Children in 1986-1987[1].”
•    “It is estimated that 84% of the caries experience in the 5 to 17 year-old population involves tooth surfaces with pits and fissures. Although fluorides cannot be expected appreciably to reduce our incidence of caries on these surfaces, sealants can..”[2].”
•    “Pit and fissure cavities aren’t considered to be preventable by fluorides, they are prevented by sealants “[3].”

Directory Bowman it is unfortunate Mr. Roth had to leave early because had he stayed, he would have found the remaining testimony by the “experts” embarrassing.
Evidently they are not experienced in testifying in front of Water Districts where the board and the Staff have actually done their homework.
Our board had to correct the speakers a number of times:
•    Anecdotal, oh yes thank you, I meant clinical,
•    Directory Caspary knew that European countries Salt Fluoridate,
•    Director Bowman was aware of the curious WHO statement in support of Water Fluoridation after Tooth decay trends tracked by the World Health Organization from 1970 to the present showed the incidence of decayed, missing or filled teeth is the same in countries that do and do not Fluoridate.
•    Director Renger is getting an honorary degree in Remineralization

However no one was prepared for the woman with a South American accent and mouthful of orthodontia.  She stood up and gave us her credentials but then with a straight face turned to the audience and said she was really there because she was a “Mother”.  Turning back to the board she then told them there was nothing to worry about because any Fluoride in the water not used for Remineralization will be excreted in the urine.  Before any one in the audience could shout the word Neurotoxin, two members of the board had to correct her that Fluoride was absorbed by the bones and tissues, but then helped her out by claiming it was a minor amount and so far no director believed any of the peer reviewed studies that linked Fluoride to cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, hip fractures, or chronic fatigue syndrome.
Of course this minor amount of Fluoride also damages the brain, both directly and indirectly. High concentrations of fluoride accumulate in the pineal gland, which produces serotonin and melatonin. People with Alzheimer’s disease have high levels of aluminum in their brains. Dr. Russell Blaylock, MD, a neurosurgeon, spells out in chilling detail the danger fluoride poses to one’s brain and health in general in his book Health and Nutrition Secrets that can Save Your Life (2002).  And Fluoride has a particular affinity for calcium and thus for bone; and it poisons bones the same way it does teeth.
People who consume 10–25 mg of fluoride a day over 10 to 20 years, or 2mg/day over 40 years, will develop skeletal fluorosis. The first manifestations of this disease, before there are any changes on x-ray, are joint pains and arthritic symptoms, which are indistinguishable from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; muscle weakness; chronic fatigue; and gastrointestinal disorders. In the next stage, osteoporosis develops and bones become more brittle and weak, making them prone to fracture.
So my recommendation to Mr. Roth would be to find out how much the board members know about Water Fluoridation before the meetings so they can avoid being embarrassed. Our board deserves recognition for doing their homework.
