Donald Trump's "Mad Max America" - Be Very Afraid

He's the Republican Party's presidential nominee and in his egotistic and narcissistic mind we're living in a "Mad Max" apocalyptic America. As I sat glued to my television set and daring to hope that Donald Trump would behave presidential and rise to the occasion to show his statesmanship and instill some form of future confidence, I was sorely disappointed. I could not help but conclude that that prime time speech was written by the Mad Hatter and plagiarized from Don Quixote.

The speech was angry, divisive, lacking in substance, and served notice to Blacks, Latinos and others that he's going to bring back a modern, 21st century version of internment camps. Mr. Trump does not want foreigners in the United States. Trump's litany of BS talking points was a hodgepodge, higgledy-piggledy slap together set of incoherent and unrelated morass -- a veritable jumbled mass of incoherent nonsense.

For example, President Trump of the big balls would toss all out old-fashioned notions and principles that have driven American foreign policy for over 75 years. Yes, dumb BS like "adhering to treaties," and "meeting commitments to allies" and "not being a complete back-stabbing weasel at all times" will drive a Trump Foreign policy even though he was long on rhetoric and very short on specifics.

As the Nominee of Doom told a packed convention hall that he loved cops and that he's the man to make America great again. The Supreme Bogeyman ranted and raged, mouth foaming at times; at other times the comical grimaces and primate-like smile -- a kind of cubist cross between a circus clown and a weasel. I floated between instinctive rage, as a Black man, taking great umbrage at a man who saluted and genuflected to America's cops, shamelessly brownnosing and pandering, while he ignored the pain and suffering of Blacks, Latinos and others who lost loved ones to police violence. Yes, I drifted into spontaneous nervous giggling that the spectacle of a man, a strutting peacock, so full of himself that he's now convinced that his new title would be God of All.

But there was another emotion -- fear. Crippling, awe-inspiring and all consuming chronic fear. Fear of a man whose speech delivery, a brutal, dark harangue, reminiscent of the pre-Second World days when another dark, egotist strutted -- just like Mr. Trump -- across Germany's political stage to the thunderous applause and near fanatical adoration of millions of people who genuinely believed that a conman and snake oil salesman was the German Messiah.

I don't know what those folks in Trump Towers are eating or drinking but there is an aura of the delusional and wackiness that has never been part of a modern day presidential campaign. Boasting about his primary exploits and how many votes he got and how he was the greatest at ALL things and how we was going to make America win again, on and on, and on, nauseatingly so. It was a "me, myself and I" speech about how he did not need this job but that America and the world would be lucky and privileged to have him as President In Chief, Insulter First Class who will fix ALL of America's problems "very fast" because it was "easy to do" -- ah, Hey Presto! and flash the Trump Magic Wand and all will be done! In the end the speech was a total and complete rehash of his primary stump speech, with insults, name-calling and bombast, only broadened and tinkered to include all kinds of lies, half-truths, and accusations bellowed and shouted in a way that did not give you time to think.

Unscripted, disjointed, incoherent and combative Donald Trump lurched from one topic to the other, promising EVERYTHING but saying very little about how he was going to get them done. It was red meat to the partisan Republican faithful caught up as if in a Divine Trump Rapture as he criticized, screeched, bullied, ostracized and attacked everything Democratic, President Obama and Hillary Clinton. In the end Mr. Trump bellowed about how he is going to "Make America Great Again " -- just trust him. There was no "how" -- just the usual "I know how to get things done" (his wife, his children, and ALL RNC convention other speakers keep saying that over and over again as if to make themselves believe it).

The terrorists are coming, immigrants are killing Americans all over the country, the police are under siege, Mexicans are raping our women, and Americans "are not safe in their homes." According to Trump, Hillary Clinton is the Devil Incarnate and he's got the Righteous Sword to correct that. He knows EVERYTHING about Washington (and America), he's the expert on Washington and he admitted, "I know Washington better than anyone else in America." The only thing that he did not do was to offer Americans gas masks, urge them to buy more guns, because of an attack on American society from ISIS, Islamists, and Mexican criminals shooting cops in the streets.

For Trump America has lost her way, was weak, - all caused by President Obama - and he's just the man to fix that with a new approach. He was going to renegotiate ALL contracts that did not meet his approval. Presumably the kind of negotiating that has made him avoid paying taxes and shaft business associates. A parade of D-list speakers thundered and pounded the podium to drive home their angry message of race-bating, xenophobia, fear and immigrant-bashing as if living in a parallel Trump Universe, a kind of eerie twilight zone where Trumpie zombies live and breed.

But on a more strategic note the RNC convention and Trump's primetime performance exposed the weakness in his campaign and infrastructure. And more than that he did what Hillary Clinton could never do -- energize Bernie Sanders voters to support and vote for her -- even while holding their noses. For them not voting for Hillary Clinton and staying home was no longer an option because the alternative is just so frightening. His lame attack on Latinos will swing toss-up Florida right back in the Clinton column -- a must win for her.

Trump's acceptance speech has cemented the Black vote for Ms. Clinton and has given Black Republicans pause. To be sure, he has consolidated his Republican base but did nothing to sway independents and undecided voters. Nor did he "grow his base" or expand it. Even if he was appealing to a targeted narrow demographic in swing states the way he did it was appalling -- condescending, jingoistic, chest-thumping and radiating an aura that "I, Donald J. Trump is your Savior and Your Supreme Commander." That's likely to turn off many conservative voters -- especially seniors -- that he glaringly left out of his speech.

One other highlight of the speech was Mr. Trump's oblique insinuating that Hillary Clinton was a criminal who should be put in jail. His glary-eyed ignorant supporters started to chant "lock her up!" You could see the smirk on his face. He attacked the media -- relentlessly -- and yet after his speech they were prostrating themselves at his feet, shamelessly groveling and remarking, "just how well he did, how Ivanka "did a great job," and now "it was a remarkable speech."

It was not a remarkable speech and fact checkers must be experiencing real hand problems having to catch up with the sheer monumental list of untruths, lies, and "fact twisting" that Mr. Trump has demonstrated his unrivaled expertise in this regard. He all but brushed off the ill-conceived plagiarizing of Michelle Obama's 2008 speech by his wife, not the brightest bulk in the room, with a set of very limited credentials.

I mean coming on the heels of the Ted Cruz hatchet job the day before after he allowed a sworn enemy to speak at the convention, I felt that I'd seen the worst of the RNC convention. Sure, Trump desperately wants Cruz's formidable ground name and so he threw out the invite only to have Cruz kick him in the nuts. Cruz later said that this was payback for him attacking his wife. So on to the Democratic Convention.
