A Republican Senate take-over victory on November 4th could be just the first blow to hopes for positive change, let alone retaining any progress made in recent years. Most analysts expect gridlock-- and that's the best hope-- one that may not be very realistic.
They're saying the odds are there will be a Republican majority in the senate. The only bulwarks blocking passage of troglodyte laws and policies by the house and senate working together will be two potential factors-- Democratic filibusters and presidential vetoes by Obama. Good luck.
The Democrats have a shameful record of spineless responses to Republicans. I predict that Harry Reid, if the Democrats keep this loser in position as senate Minority Leader, will not be nearly as aggressive in blocking Republican trouble-making with filibusters and, before issues get that far, in committees. We can expect the senate democrats to be a leaky bulwark, especially on social issues where the DINOs, if any survive, like Mary Landrieu.
Then there's the amazingly predictable President Barack Obama. We can predict that he will operate as he has in the past, non-progressive, to the right of presidents Nixon, Eisenhower and even Reagan on many business issues, and operating as a highly incompetent negotiator, asking and settling for far less just to get things done, even if they're bad things. Obama has a history of appointing close, close friends of big banking and big finance-- the Robert Rubin family of experts at taking care of the one percent at the expense of the ninety-nine percent.
There's every reason to expect that Obama will disappoint the left, and even disappoint Democrats.
One more thing-- once/if the Republicans take the senate majority, there's a possibility that independent Angus King of Maine will flip and caucus with the majority Republican party.
So, what to do? Go local. Work on making change happen outside of congress. Go local and get involved with boycotts.
