There is so much press given to torture and political prisoners outside of our U.S. borders, but there were many good people targeted during the Bush years, and they are in desperate need of our attention.  One of those is Don Siegelman, former governor of Alabama.  Our justice department is deafeningly silent on the political persecution of this good man.

Can you imagine being given a SEVEN-YEAR sentence and thrown in prison after being convicted on trumped-up charges?

Can you imagine going before a judge who is politically vindictive against you instead of one who is fair and honorable?

Can you imagine being shackled and hauled off to a maximum-security prison to be put in solitary confinement...when the bribe they accused you of is made up out of whole cloth?

Can you imagine something like that happening to you in the United States of America?

In the 21st Century?

Can you imagine that you are a strong Democratic leader and that every person controlling your fate is a Republican extremist?

Can you imagine not only having your appeal denied but then watching your shameless prosecutors advocate for a MUCH LONGER sentence of 20 YEARS?

And all this before that same judge as the first time?  Siegelman Deserves New Trial Because of Judge's 'Grudge,' Evidence Shows

Well if you were Don Siegelman, this would be more than a mental exercise.  This would be the last few years of your life.  It is time for Barack Obama and Eric Holder to turn their attention to political targets who were conveniently silenced under the auspices of Bush's tainted justice department.

We voted for change.  Repairing our tattered Constitution is crucial and urgent.  Exonerating our innocent political prisoners is paramount.

I call upon our President and Attorney General to turn their attention to Governor Siegelman and to take this important step toward rebuilding our democracy.  And while they're at it, maybe they could take a good, long look at Mark Fuller.  Now that would be justice!
