Congratulations Cindy Sheehan

Tell A Friend

With respect and appreciation, congratulations Cindy on your run against the formidable Democratic House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi. Success does not always reveal itself in the number of levers pulled, buttons pushed, screens touched or whatever godforsaken voting machine one uses in California’s District 8.

Success is shown in the great numbers of Americans who have supported you and your efforts since we first uttered to a friend, a colleague, a family member, "Hey, did you hear about the woman whose son was killed in Iraq? She’s camping outside Bush’s ranch in Texas. Yea, she wants to ask the president for what noble cause did her son die…that’s a damn good question."

In the summer of 2005, success might have been measured by President Bush taking a break from clearing brush to answer the simple question of a mother whose beloved son was killed in his "noble" war.

Instead, success was determined by the thousands upon thousands of supporters who traveled from all over the country, the world, to a small town called Crawford helping to ignite the anti-war movement in this country.

When evidence first trickled in that the attack and occupation of Iraq was based on lies and intelligence "fixed" around the policy, when our government abandoned habeas corpus, engaged in extraordinary rendition and torture, when countless Americans fell victim to illegal wiretapping and the media looked the other way, you were there to shine light on it.

Success might have been measured by the impeachment and removal of those responsible for these crimes against humanity and our Constitution. By joining with thousands of Americans who refused to tolerate these egregious acts you were successful in helping to awaken, energize and give hope and direction to millions of people.

When you refused to play the game and fearlessly confronted "non-Republican" leaders, you were chastised and abandoned by those who had used you for their own gain. Instead of shrinking away, you stood tall and you were successful in taking control of your own destiny.

When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to abide by her sworn oath to defend and protect the Constitution at least in part to cover her own criminal trail, you were successful in becoming the sixth person in the history of California to qualify as an independent on a congressional ballot in order to challenge her.

In turn, you inspired everyday citizens to throw their hats in the ring, to declare this the year they would stop responding to fear and vote for a third party candidate who actually represented their views. Through your courage and at times unconventional ways, you reminded us what a real democracy looks like.

Throughout the campaign process you and your staff were victims of harassment, the breaking and entering of your campaign office and theft. You were forced to run a challenge against an opponent too afraid to face you for a single debate and a press that chose to act as pawns of the powers that be rather than as champions of a free nation. But, like so many times before you weathered the storm. In the end, you earned a respectable showing against a powerful politician wedded to a corrupt establishment.

In an age where people demand immediate gratification or else they bail, you showed that no great change can come by giving in to those who would divide, by backing off when confrontation is what is in order, or by trading integrity for approval.

Congratulations Cindy on successfully speaking truth to power, for enduring when others would cave, and for demonstrating that from the deepest depth of despair we can rise up and realize our strength and with it help change the world.

Amen, amen, amen....

This one struggle for me epitomized the reality of America's basic challenge ... to change the system by doing the "right" thing. It was easy to vote Democratic in a safe district, especially to maintain the vicarious power as Speaker of the House. Even if the incumbent Democratic candidate was shown repeatedly to have no respect for the fundamentals of her oath to uphold the Constitution.

Cindy ... thanks, warm earnest thanks from me for taking on this challenge. You made a difference simply by doing always the "right thing", by telling the truth, by showing courage, by taking the risks, and always demonstrating by your resolve and commitment to a better future, just what is the true meaning of L O V E! Your son without any doubt is very very proud of his Mother.   WTP

Cindy Is The Real Winner

Cindy the brave and the uncorruptible who dared to stand up  to a gangleader massmurderer and to tell him  the Truth, she is our leader no matter what comes out of the trick machines.

God Bless Cindy

"Through your courage and at times unconventional ways, you reminded us what a real democracy looks like."

Why is this in past tense? Why should it end? Pelosi is no less the villain. And Cindy will forever be my hero. Americans need more people like her, a little less politically skilled, perhaps, but so much more real and effective in making change for the better. You go girl. We need you to help expose and rid the Pelosis, politicians who are where they are because of their connection to wealth rather than character, of our system.

Reply: Nick

Nick, I was simply writing from my heart last night and elucidating what Cindy has done for us. My understanding is that she will be challenging Pelosi again in 2010. She will have my continued support as she has for the last three-plus years. No, I do not expect Cindy to pass the torch, but she has lit countless torches along the way and it's up to us to keep them burning and to light a few ourselves.

You've been an inspiration to us all!

And we will not forget what you stand for and what is still to be done.
Pelosi's days are numbered, as are the days of all the Neocon Bootlickers.

It's a wonderful morning in America!
We can exhale!
We can stop thinking about moving to Canada or into a bunker!
God keep him safe until the inauguration and his promise fulfilled!
God keep you safe to persevere until we win the Peace!
Love to you and all of us who have dared to struggle!

Pelosi's corruption reflects that of her constituency.

I can't even imagine anyone voting for mass-murderer Pelosi over Cindy Sheehan. Moreover, as I understand it, it was an "easy" win for Pelosi. Clearly, the "people" have spoken, and they demand pure evil.

Reply: This is so sadly true

One wonders how the HELL did she get re-elected? What true democrat could possibly vote for her again? How is it possible? Something is desperately wrong with our system.

17% is more than respectable

Indeed, it's a sign that there is a groundswell of anger with the Democratic establishment. The Pelosi machine were unable to prevent you from doing as well as a Canadian New Democrat. Keep on keepin' on, stay focussed, stay away from the Democratic Party ... hell, we'll make you an honorary NDPer.

You ran it right

Great show Cindy. Hopefully  you did not run yourself to ragged and have some left to help us push this new Administration to end these two  wars we are invovled in and  further the interests of the people in this Country and not the Corporations.

CNN Coverage

On CNN's webpage, the results of the District 8 polls showed Pelosi winning big, with the Republican a far second. Sheehan's name was not to be found.

But, if you go to a local source, Cindy finished second,  almost DOUBLED the votes the Republican received (actually more than third and fourth place combined!), and 1/5 of what the incumbent Pelosi received, with all of the msm ignoring Cindy's campaign.

If that had been a run at the White House, Cindy would have received the equivelant of over 1,000,000 votes!!

QUITE an acheivement for an Independent, and I am very proud to say I assisted this fine woman, this brave woman, in her quest for justice and truth.

Love ya, Cindy.

Reply: MSNBC was better

I started using CNN and found that MSNBC had better coverage, more up to date and smarter... and they included Cindy-- pretty much the only reason I checked California stats.

Americans do indeed

"have some unfinished business that needs tending."  Thank you for this wonderful tribute to Cindy, Cheryl.  And for the photograph.

And with regard to our unifinished business, I hope all of Cindy's supporters stand tall behind her declared intention to continue her efforts to impeach Bush (regardless of the outcome of the November 4 election) .

Ditto

Why did a progressive community such as San Francisco re-elect "off the Table" Pelosi is the question.  Maybe they don't deserve recognition for same sex marriage, it apparently leads to brain rot

Reply: DON'T LINK SAME SEX MARRIAGE TO BRAIN ROT, EVEN HUMOROUSLY!

I ASSUME this is humor intended to highlight the irony of a city that supports same sex marriage reelecting Nancy Pelosi.  However, as a Gay man, I would appreciate if you would not link same sex marriage to brain rot, even humorously.

They will call her "Blessed"........

Let me just say how proud I am of Cindy Sheehan.  I have admired her and respected her stance against this evil war and occupation since she first stepped  foot in Crawford, TX.  Continue to fight the good fight, Cindy and know that Pelosi's evil works will have a reckoning day.

Peace and Blessings to you sweet Cindy

method of voting

If ever there was a case to illustrate that the US method of voting is flawed, this is it. There must have been countless voters who would have liked to vote for Cindy but did not dare to do so for fear of allowing a republican to win.

It is time for America to realize that preferential voting is the only fair system. It is the only way that small parties and independents can get a fair vote that really represents the wishes of the people. This should be a high priority on Obama's list.
