The video produced by the video camera worn by University of Cincinnati cop Ray Tensing shows that his description of the shooting of Sam DuBose circumstances is a lie.
Tensing said that he shot because he was being dragged by the car as Sam DuBose tried to get away. The body camera he was wearing shows that he shot before the car started moving.
Cincinnati.com reports, "'It's an absolute tragedy that anyone would behave in this manner,' Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said after publicly releasing the video. "It was senseless. It's just horrible. He purposefully killed him.'"
Officer Tensing is facing a sentence of 15 years to life for the crime.
The police officer with Tensing backed up the cover story/lie. Family members and protesters are calling for that police officer to be charged as well.
He should be charged. He is a symptom of the big problem the nation as a whole and police culture has-- the protection of bad cops-- often enabled by fellow police lying to protect their criminal associates. Perhaps cops who lie to protect their fellow officers should face charges equivalent to the officer being charged, since they are conspiring and colluding, just as a person who is involved in a crime that produces a murder is also guilty of the crime.
Criminal Cop Culture of Protection Must Be Broken
It is essential that the current cop culture of protecting fellow cops, even if they have violated the law, be broken. Asking police to change won't do it. Colluding cops must be charged, prosecuted and given severe penalties, for breaking the law and for lying to protect fellow officers. If it takes new laws to make that happen then they should be passed quickly.
Tensing's fellow officer, by corroborating a total lie, conspired with Tensing to hide the murder. isn't it a crime to lie to an officer of the law? It should be a bigger crime, with jail time required on the first offense, for police who lie, and a collection of crimes if a police officer lies to protect another police officer.
Any cop backing up the story of another cop who hurts a civilian should be required to be given a polygraph test. While lie detector tests can't be used in court, they could be used to help prosecutors and internal affairs officers make decisions on whether to investigate further.
