The anti-muslim hate video that has set the Muslim world afire with protests has gone hyper viral, with a jump of almost 1.4 million views in just over a day and it could hit five, even twenty million views. It could become one of the most viewed videos on youtube ever. Currently, one of the most viewed videos is
Evolution of Dance, with over 200 million views.
Wednesday morning, as the news of the four deaths in Bengazi was fresh, at about 8 AM EST, there were about 22,000 views of the video that the protests in Egypt and Libya were responding to. By 9:00 AM, I re-checked the count. It was up to 55,000. By 10 AM it was around 85,000. By 10 PM it was almost 800,000
This morning, at 11 AM EST, the video has been viewed close to 1.4 million times. There are over 38,000 comments on the video, including some obscenely hateful, bigoted remarks that aim to everything possible to insult and offend Muslims. (all the images of graphs were based on stats generated by youtube.com at 11:10 AM EST)
As you can see from the youtube graph of views, this was uploaded in July, with under 20,000 views before the news broke of the deaths in Bengazi.
Based on the acceleration in the viewing pattern, it is not unreasonable to predict that the video will have been viewed more than five million times in the next week, possibly even 20 million views by the end of the month.
Now, where did these views come from?
We can some idea by further checking youtube stats:
To get another perspective, we can also look at "likes" versus "dislikes," as the graph below portrays.
It will be interesting to see, in the comments, who you think "like" the video.
Actually, the numbers are much higher than those reported above. Other people, using anonymous identities, have copied and uploaded the video to youtube. A simple
search uncovered at least a million additional views of the video on a handful of other "member" pages like
DARTHF3TT,
jennygonewild,
PassOnTheTruth and
Seexyy Naija, who appear to be trying to exploit the interest in the video.
There is now a question about the person who, early yesterday, was credited with creating the video, Sam Becile, the person who uploaded the video to youtube.
It is often helpful to ask the classic question, "qui bono." Who benefits-- from the video, from the angry reaction in the Muslim world, from the deaths of Americans? What are your thoughts?
