Chicago Baby Jonylah Watkins Dead After Being Shot while her father was changing her diaper. by YouTube
Welcome to the American shooting gallery in which the targets are the people of America and, increasingly, its children. What's going on can only be described as a form of societal madness. Developing effective gun safety regulations to combat the growing violence in America should be a no-brainer; that is, if those in charge possessed a reasonable amount of intelligence and any sense of morality. They possess neither.
The pathetic politicians who have contaminated this Congress and the legislative process have the power to create effective laws that would lay the groundwork for greatly reducing the needless slaughter of an escalating number of innocent Americans; especially the helpless children who are becoming the prime targets of the monsters in our society who are given every opportunity to possess these weapons of societal destruction.
But does this grave situation and the deaths of these children bother these politicians? Absolutely not, as they are determined to protect the gun industry at all costs. This has now gone much too far and, so, we must clearly identify those politicians who are directly responsible for and guilty of the carnage that is being caused in this society by these deadly weapons that should not be in the possession of anyone in America; weapons that are designed for only one purpose and that is to kill scores of people in a matter of minutes.
Without question, the guiltiest are the Republicans and their masters, the gun lobbies and the gun manufacturers. Republicans have proven that they care not a whit about the slaughter of these children; they will fight to protect the interests of those who profit from the proliferation of weaponry and will do anything to obstruct the creation of legislation that would serve to bring this situation under control. They are beyond any form of mental rehabilitation and there is only one thing to be done; they must be stopped in their tracks.
Now let's proceed to identifying the other individuals who need to be excoriated for their unconscionable refusal to take appropriate action that would stop the rapidly escalating bloodbath that is taking place in this society. The Democratic Party, with a few notable exceptions, must share the guilt and take responsibility for allowing this carnage to continue unabated, and failing to provide strong leadership when it is critically needed.
At the head of the list of Democrats who are the most responsible for failing to address this issue in an intelligent, moral way has to be Harry Reid, the sorely under-qualified Senate Majority Leader. You know, good old weak-kneed, Harry who has twice backed down and caved in to pressure from Sociopathic Republicans and cowardly Democrats and failed to change the Senate filibuster rules that would put a stop to Republican obstruction of important legislation.
On the Republican side we have the likes of Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and Eric Cantor, no more than empty shells, who don't even try to hide the fact that they are indentured servants of Corporate America and the gun lobbies. The Republicans, in lockstep, fully intend to prevent the initiation of legislation to ban assault weapons, to institute stronger background checks and to limit the size of ammunition magazines. And while they are in the process of this obstruction we hear good old Harry lamenting that he can't proceed to bring such legislation to a vote because he doesn't have the 60 votes needed to avoid a GOP filibuster.
"I'm not going to try to put something on the floor that won't succeed," Reid added. "I think the worst of all worlds would be to bring something to the floor and it dies there." He also said, "But right now, her (Senator Diane Feinstein) amendment, using the most optimistic numbers, has less than 40 votes. That's not 60. I have to get something on the floor."
What is with this guy? He's the one who had the opportunity to stop this obstruction and choked. Can't he even remember that he could have changed the filibuster rules a couple of months ago when some of his Democratic colleagues were begging him to do so. Yes, the Republicans are the enemy of gun regulations but Harry Reid will forever be known as the person who had the chance to initiate legislation to stop the slaughter of innocent children but he, once again, bowed down to the threats of the Republicans and walked away from the battle.
I have no idea how these politicians, both Republican and far too many Democrats, can be so cowardly and how they can live with themselves. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to try to understand how they can continue to watch a succession of these atrocities against their fellow Americans take place without becoming enraged and vowing to take swift and meaningful action to prevent them going into the future. They seem to be a special breed of people who possess genes that make them incapable of thinking about the needs and welfare of others.
And what about President Obama, is he bending arms, knocking heads together, pounding his fist, and shouting from Bully Pulpit that that our children must not continue to be subjected to these crimes of inhumanity? Right now there should be nothing more important than solving this critically important problem and safeguarding the lives of our children. He should be verbally lashing the Republicans for their obstruction and cracking the whip to snap Harry Reid out of his paralytic state.
Mr. Obama needs to take time away from launching drones into other countries, going after whistleblowers and thinking of what other Constitutional rights and freedoms he can take away from the American people and give this issue his total attention. He is doing what he has done time and time again on many issues; he comes on strong at the beginning of a process to bring about change, makes some stirring, inspiring statements, makes a few trips where he talks about the issue before crowds of his followers, and then he seems to largely disappear and let the process drift.
What's happening right before our eyes is a national disgrace. The proliferation of guns in America coupled with the brazen obstruction of the creation of effective gun safety legislation by this Congress, with many on both sides of the aisle guilty of societal treason, represents a deadly menace to this country. It's a clear illustration of politicians who have no conscience, have sold their souls, and are devoid of the principles of morality.
The biggest need of all in dealing with this massive dilemma lies with the American people who, in the face of these dangers to their children, remain far too silent, far too passive. They need to break out of this state by mobilizing, taking to the streets, demonstrating, protesting and telling these politicians that they are going to be run out of Congress in the next elections unless they do something to protect the children of America. The time for action is now before the next succession of societal atrocities shakes the foundations of this nation.
And let's just say this; if, after the deaths of the twenty young children in Newtown CT, this Congress fails to pass crucial legislation -- if the obstructionists block any and all attempts to bring an end to these needless slaughters - and the American people do not take to the streets in massive demonstrations, showing their rage and outrage, then we must conclude that this society is in the process of unraveling.
