The Old Codger: America: Love it or leave it

Obama has won the election.  Woo-Hoo.  Everyone is making a big deal out of the first black man to ascend to the White House, which according to my conservative friends, will quickly be renamed “The Black House.”  It is unknown when the painting crews will show up, but if they repaint it without charging the taxpayer anything, I’m OK with it, providing they repaint again just before he leaves.

No, I’m not all that thrilled with Obama winning the election. That’s not to say that for the two weeks before the election my stomach wasn’t churning every morning as I read the news and the latest polls.  That churning was out of fear that McCain and Palin would get the final nod.  (Note to Self:  Need to celebrate tonight with a few beers.)

Obama was marginally the lesser of two evils.  I can’t say as though I really go along with any of his proposals to bring change to the country.  Mighty hard to bring any meaningful changes to Washington if you start stacking your administration with Washington insiders.  Do have to wonder though if the puppy he is taking to the White House is a pit bull…

Like him or tolerate him.  Love him or hate him.  He will be the new Commander in Chief on January 20th.  Short of anything dramatic happening, he belongs to America for the next four years.

My e-mail box is once again filling up with mail from all the right wing conservatives.  I swear.  Those boys must be working 24/7 coming up with all their anti-Democrat and anti-liberal stuff.  There is no doubt that a lot of the folks over on the Left are in desperate need of some serious sensitivity training programs.

Over the next three or four years at least, the non-conservatives do have a chance for a bit of revenge.  Now is the opportune time to start reminding the conservatives of their favorite lines anytime and everytime someone criticized George W. Bush...

“It is un-American to criticize a war time president.  It divides the country.”  Obama of course is inheriting three wars from the Bush Administration -- Afghanistan, Iraq and Wall Street.

“He is our Commander in Chief and he knows better than anyone else about what to do.  He has the best minds in the country working for him.”

“He is a war time president and everyone must show him the respect that he is due.”

“When at war, the country must stand behind its Commander in Chief.”

“Remember - this is America.  Love it or Leave it.  That includes loving your new Commander in Chief.”

“You’re either with Obama or you’re against him.”

Hopefully someone will get busy now and write a book entitled “How to Talk to a Conservative -- If you have to.”  The non-conservatives need to capitalize on the opportunities that they have now that they are in the majority.  To pass up these opportunities would be just plain un-American.

The Old Codger has left the room with a big smile on his face.

The Old Codger today is an old, cynical, cantankerous, contrarian who enjoys the occasional bottle of Jack Daniels. He works in a university of some repute attempting to teach writing, critical thinking and logic, all three of which are daunting (more...)
