Pep Talk for Impeachment Outreach

“You’ll never get enough support for the cause”.

“It won’t work”.

“Nothing will happen”.

“The Hudson River is too polluted to clean up”.

Yet, with all these well-meant warnings, Pete Seeger set sail on the Hudson River, strumming his guitar and bringing his friends along with him. And what happened? The un-cleanable river was in fact cleaned up, the undoable was accomplished, and there was lots of support for the cause! His singing on the Hudson River worked!

And let’s not forget: This was the work of ONE man which influenced the entire area!

Similarly, why can’t our own activism for the sake of impeaching Bush and Cheney be of effect? Why can’t the lone voice of Kucinich in Congress suddenly snowball and gain power?

To those of us skeptics on this forum who are saying that Kucinich’s 35 articles of impeachment “will never go anywhere”, let’s be reminded of a few facts:

Times have changed. Thanks to our mainstream journalists, we now have the torture issue and the Valerie Plame case on the public radar. Therefore, pro-impeachment sentiment is bound to be on the rise. Thus, where many of us may be inclined to think that we have a dumbed-down nation which is asleep at the wheel----and even while I am inclined to agree with that position, by the way----I also suggest that we tell ourselves:

“That was then, this is now”.

Because in fact, in the here and now, repeat: Times have changed. And the dynamics will have changed along with it. Knowledge is power: As people learn more and more about Cheney’s leaking of Valerie Plame’s name, how her life was endangered by that leak; as people learn more and more facts about the torture cases and Bush’s presiding over them; then surely the case for impeachment can only become a nation-wide concern.

Time for us skeptics to look at the donut and not the hole!

I also want to suggest that while we on this forum understandably bemoan and berate the Media for its deliberate lack of coverage of key issues, while brainwashing a nation of people with falsified or at best with biased “Facts” about pivotal matters, we also need to take responsibility for *our own* role as on-line journalists. And to do so, we must keep our eyes focused on the hope, rejoicing in every last drop of it:

We the People have the power to spread word, with or without the media. The Internet is so fast. Plus, with people increasingly tuning in to alternative news sources, it only makes sense to spread word through that medium.

A) Let’s send out chain e-mails, asking recipients to contact members of Congress and urge impeachment. Let’s remind our friends (because they may feel that their calls will be ineffective) that Congress wants to maintain their seat in office: Therefore, they must obey the public will, or they will be committing political suicide. Please motivate your email recipients with hope! Depression governs our masses, but hope is a powerful motivator. We must come up with that hope, and spread the word far and wide!

Let’s also take responsibility for spreading the word about impeachment, if indeed the Media is typically blocking this out.

This quote summarizes the nature of my concerns and the content of personal experiences which stir my activism: "Necessity is the plea for every infringement on human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves". --Paul (more...)
