  • I'm sure most of us of more than, oh,19, have been asked what they were doing when they heard about or saw the 9/11/2001 attacks. I heard about the first plane by a call from a buddy over the CB radio. He heard it was a private plane. I looked at what was happening on customers' TVs intermittently as I made my pickups and drop-offs, but I finished my work day.

During the hours from 9/11/01 to 9/13/01 I wrote the world's very first musical response to the incident, a song titled "The Red White and Blues." I played it at the Cushing (OK) Blues Festival with my band the next week, and recorded it for my 2002 release, "Big Shoes to Fill."

It was, along with the late Dave Dudley's 2001 song "You Ain't Gonna Truck With Us," ("Dave Dudley, American Trucker," Music Mill Entertainment Inc.), the most unalloyed expression of the hurt and anger the nation collectively felt at the act someone had done, actually reaching across the ocean and striking at our homeland.

I could never have written the song a year later. Our naive butt-hurt feelings had by the second half of 2002 paled before the evidence that the Official Narrative was shot through with lies, omissions, cowardice, cover-ups, a freaking stadium full of red flags waving.

As I've told others, I cannot think to right the wrongs of 2001 or ever know the truth of it. I don't have the money to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Even justice in the Oklahoma City Murrah Bombing case, something I have researched, and for which I used to be able to imagine scenarios in which I could generate sufficient capital to pay the necessary personnel that could bring such justice, has inflated beyond the means of myself or any other non-super-rich investigator.

It is part of-- at the core of-- the behavioral psychological paradigm sought by those who instruct the political managers of this nation: make sure people become USED to their leaders lying to them, by policy, institutionally. When people are inured to being lied to, their disapproval of lying behavior (especially when lying, cheating, stealing and killing are constantly glamorized by an institution that EVERYONE thinks is "good" and "fun"-- Hollywood), is diluted.

And although the private crimes of a Bernie Madoff might make big scandal news, the crimes of, for instance, the US' international connivance with Turkey to allow Turkey to fight the Kurds it doesn't like but let the ones that WE like alone-- and not even to mention the arming and training of ISIL back when we thought they were reasonable, "moderate rebel" tools against Assad even when we knew they were al-Qaeda already-- scream from the headlines but are lost in the howling hurricane of information overload in the minds of almost all citizens.

  • And there's nothing more that we can do
You and I, we're only two
What's right what's wrong it's hard to say
    Forget about it for today

Just pretend that all is planned,

My name is William Perkins Homans the third, but probably more people know me as the bluesman (and artist) Watermelon Slim.

I've been in the fight against war, fascism, injustice and inhumanity for 40 years. I was at MayDay, and at the moratorium March the week before. I was one of the leaders of the Great New Jersey Turnpike Stall on my birthday, April 25, 1971.

I bear the scar on my left shin from a neoNazi jackboot, when I was one of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War who bounced the NSWPP from Flamingo Park at the Republican National Convention of 1972. My father fought the Nazis in the North Atlantic and Anzio, and I met their spawn in Miami.

My formal education has been first-rate. I wouldn't trade my degrees for Harvard ones. I was raised in the finest private Catholic and Episcopal high schools.

Elementary School: Gibbons Hall, Asheville, North Carolina

High Schools: Asheville School for Boys, Asheville Country Day, Lenox School for Boys. Graduated with honors 1968.

College: Middlebury College, 1968-DNG

1984-86: University of Oregon, B.A., Journalism and History, Departmental Honors in History, 1986.

I was also captain of the U of O bowling team, 1984-1986. High game 299.

1997-2000: Oklahoma State University. M.A., History, 2000, plus the school-teaching curriculum. Mentor: Dr. Ronald Petrin.

This was my second great self-reinvention attempt. In both, I got the degrees, but neither worked. After both, I went back to truckdriving and the blues. and now the latter makes my living. I just am not a button-down enough fellow ever to be a schoolteacher or general-purpose news reporter. But I think and analyze, and so I write...
