In the televised election debate with Mousavi, Ahmadinejad had accused two former presidents, Rafsanjani and Khatami, of having involved in corruption while in office. The accusation of corruption against Rafsanjani is easily taken seriously for it must be difficult for the public to understand how a pious Ayatollah could have become one of the richest men in the world.

Media pundits describe the split among the mullahs as if the faction supporting Mousavi demonstrators and Mousavi is progressive, but Mousavi, along with Khatami and Rafsanjani in his program calls for increasing privatization, even promoting the creation of private TV stations (plugged into the international media cartel perhaps?), hardly a reform movement in tune with American progressive or Latin American socialist values.

In The Lying Game, September 30, 2009, Information Clearing House.
John Pilger wraps up a description of a preposterous U.S. public gleeful self-cheering for justice and change in a distant "enemy' nation as a welcome and righteous distraction from its own house in abysmal disorder.

"Iran's crime is its independence. Having thrown out America's favourite tyrant, Shah Reza Pahlavi, Iran remains the only resource-rich Muslim state beyond US control. As only Israel has a "right to exist" in the Middle East, the US goal is to cripple the Islamic Republic. This will allow Israel to divide and dominate the region on Washington's behalf, undeterred by a confident neighbour. Obama's America is run by some very dangerous people."

Talking on BBC Newsnight Henry Kissinger said that while the US will not intervene in the current crisis, if the protests fail and a "popularly based" government is not installed (ie the one he wants), then "we may conclude that we must work for regime change in Iran from the outside". (as if 'we' had not been doing so since 1953)

Not a few hard working progressives, socialists, even some calling themselves communists and at least one revolutionary web site cried "Support the Iranian people." They meant the whole population, not just those Iranians, along with sympathetic crowds around the world, who were demonstrating in unison with NATO member governments, CNN, CIA, and President Obama. These well-meaning activists defended their collaboration as one of just happening to be on the same side as the imperialists - an exceptional moment.

Seems a more modest number of America's progressive and socialist journalists were concerned with seeking evidence, wary of being fooled as Americans have so often have been fooled during America's disastrous and violent past.

Anyone who wants to can characterize the post-election demonstrations as effectively anti the dictatorship of the mullahs carrying over from a past of following all orders of Ayatollah Khomeini, but as to the has to the vote count, there was never a shred of evidence for a fraudulent vote count.

Long after many American intellectuals realize they were wrong to go along with the cries of "Where is my vote" and whether they retract or not, the Iranian election charge of fraud will remain an accepted truth by majority mainstream America. And maybe years from now the History Channel will rerun the CNN version of events as they still rerun the Vietnam War vintage film segments about the long heroic and brave American attempt to defeat communists in Vietnam.

Big media has stood truth on its head with permanency before for a vast enough public that no matter how many CIA files are declassified media lies remain gospel, as does the tale of Ahmadinejad's going to "wipe Israel off the map.'

The "Iranian people have not spoken", wrote Phil Wilayto, media transparency activist and author of In Defense of Iran, in his July 08 2009 An Open Letter to the Anti-War Movement: How should we react to the events in Iran?

Since the empire's Big Brother media is bombarding us still pretending to be that paragon of free and fair press and love for the Iranian people, a rereading of Wilayto, Mark Weisbrot, John Pilger, Paul Craig Robers and Ed Herman's documented work can't hurt.

Paul Craig Roberts reminds us that "Neoconservative Kenneth Timmerman let the cat out of the bag that there was an orchestrated "color revolution" in the works. Before the election, Timmerman wrote: "there's talk of a "green revolution' in Tehran." Why would protests be organized prior to a vote and announcement of the outcome? Organized protests waiting in the wings are not spontaneous responses to a stolen election."

While the protests were going on, Ahmadinejad was in Russia addressing the BRIC meeting, calling capitalism finished, and calling for dropping the U.S. dollar as the international currency. So while the color revolution demonstrators back home in Iran are calling for making nice with the imperialist block, and imperialist commentators in the U.S. are praising as revolutionary, demonstrators refusing to accept their candidates completely expected rout in the election. On another level, with or without its consent or even knowledge, this movement is being promoted by pro-privatization forces, particularly those associated with billionaire and free-market advocate Rafsanjani.
At the same time too much of the Americans left accepts the fraudulent election story, and or the illegitimacy of the Iranian government and takes the side of the demonstrators, though Ahmadinejad is condemning that capitalism the demonstrators would seem to be on the side of. And nobody is trying to figure this contradiction out.
