Note: Two other qualities made Washington a great leader. First, Washington was courageous,
and he fought on the front lines along side his soldiers. In his first
major battle, Washington had watched the commanding general - General
Braddock - do the same thing, and Washington likely copied this
behavior.
Washington also learned early in his military career that treating the common soldier and local townspeople with respect and dignity was key to success, for he saw that generals who treated them with disdain lost their much-needed support. For example, soldiers treated without respect often deserted. And townspeople treated with arrogance and disdain often failed to provide the provisions they had promised.
