I would like to add that the beginning of the second intifada was also non-violent (in the Satyagraha way). People often forget this. In October 2000, thousands of Nablusis (including women, children, elders) walked towards Huwara checkpoint with banners, slogans.... The Israeli soldiers responded by shooting tear gas and live ammunition. Six people got killed and many more suffered serious injuries. In the words of Saed Abu Hijleh (professor at An Najah university who attended this march), the next day, the fighters of Nablus told everyone "see what non violence resistance brings us!" and, sick of watching their people die, took over.
Saed Abu Hijleh’s mother, Shaden, was shot dead by a soldier, a few years later (2002) while embroidering on her balcony. You can watch Saed’s testimony here if you're interested.
