  • Monocultures used in agriculture are usually single strains that have been bred for high yield and resistant to certain common diseases. Since all plants in a monoculture are genetically similar, if a disease strikes to which they have no resistance, it can destroy entire populations of crops. Polyculture, which is the mixing of different crops, has natural variation and a likelihood that one or more of the crops will be resistant to any particular pathogen. Studies have shown planting a mixture of crop strains in the same field to be effective at combating disease.

The article further recommends the use of more diverse cropping systems. This could be accomplished by utilizing local food systems that provide more diversity. It also states that local food systems may encourage mulitple species and a wide variety of crops at the same time and place.

Thus we start in our own back yards or within our apartments.

First I would say we should have no more sense of apart-ments, for there is nothing that is apart from anything else. Everything is a part of everything else, but nothing is left apart as when it is defined as separate. It is probably no accident of Nature that the term apart is to be "a part of" as well as "a part from". What is separate is actually a part of. An apartment means you are apart of a community...so build community regarding your food choices.

Mm, could we be onto something big here? Do we really need to be aliens in our divorce from Nature when we are indeed a part of everything even though we may appear a part from? Perhaps the Biblical "Parting of the Sea" is an illusion because in that parting of the Sea the Sea was still One?

The part is unified with all just as the particle is the wave in quantum physics.

The Wave--particle duality postulates that all particles exhibit both wave and particle properties. A central concept of quantum mechanics, this duality addresses the inability of classical concepts like "particle" and "wave" to fully describe the behavior of quantum-scale objects. Standard interpretations of quantum mechanics explain this paradox as a fundamental property of the Universe, while alternative interpretations explain the duality as an emergent, second- order consequence of various limitations of the observer. This treatment focuses on explaining the behavior from the perspective of the widely used Copenhagen interpretation, in which wave--particle duality is one aspect of the concept of complimentary that a phenomenon can be viewed in one way or in another, but not both simultaneously.

Is it a wave or a particle? The answer is "yes and no." What are my words if not light waves entering into the pupils of your eyes and being conceived in your mind? Where are my words if not within you? Its the same with all of Nature. We are both a part of Nature and apart from Nature. This both-and (diverse and unified) mentality is simply the universal dance. Marrying the two means "both and" is married to "either or." This unity of opposites is the essence of Wisdom, as evidenced by the Buddhist image of Prajnaparimita (Wisdom of the Yonder Shore):

Dare we argue with Nature's Wisdom? Can we learn to partake in the peaceful balance evident in Her face?
